USA will not ease sanctions until North Korea denuclearises - Secretary of State

North Korea aired the historic face-to-face meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un across state media Thursday, painting the USA commander in chief in a new light.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with US President Donald Trump.

By referencing the "conflicting views", Moon appeared to be referring to Trump's unexpected promise to halt joint military exercises with South Korea, which the U.S. president called a "provocation" to the North.

Pompeo, who earlier yesterday met with officials from Japan and South Korea in Seoul, said that all four nations "have made very clear that the sanctions, and the economic relief that North Korea will receive, will only happen after full denuclearization".

Pompeo said that the US wants verifiable action by North Korea to denuclearize by January 2021. It will be treated as a military victory by the North Koreans.

Mr Pompeo said the brief, four-point joint statement that emerged from the summit did not encapsulate all the progress the United States and North Korea had made.

Pompeo dismissed a report by North Korean state media that indicated the U.S. would grant concessions to Pyongyang for gradual progress. President Moon Jae-in, an avowed supporter of engagement with North Korea, called it "a truly historic feat" that had "moved us from the era of hostility towards the era of dialogue, of peace and prosperity".

North Korea sanctions to 'remain in effect’
Bolton in turn called the description "the highest accolade I received during all my service in the Bush years". Overall, the post-summit statements from Trump and Kim are "bold" yet lack detail, reports the Times .

Right now, North Korea has the most advanced nuclear program and missile arsenal in its history.

"We're going to get denuclearisation", Mr Pompeo said.

On Wednesday, Trump declared through a series of tweets that North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat.

"Our deficit with China is still too high", Pompeo warned, adding the issue was a key concern for the U.S. president, who will decide Friday whether to impose tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese imports.

The summit in Singapore, which marked a major reduction in tensions, yielded a joint statement that contained a promise to work toward a denuclearised Korean Peninsula, but it lacked details. He also said Japan wanted US troops to remain in South Korea. "The nuclear threat will not be over until they have dismantled their entire nuclear establishment and removed both their enrichment capacity and their weapons", Shaheen said.

And he sought reassurance that the US military presence in Japan would not be reduced, after Trump indicated that he would like to withdraw all or some of the more than 28,000 troops in South Korea at some point, as both a cost saving measure, and to reduce a perceived overextended USA military presence overseas.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was mulling his own summit with Kim in August or September, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported, citing several unidentified government officials. In exchange, the United States pledged to make unspecified "security guarantees" and stop joint military exercises with South Korea.
