White House Economic Adviser: Canada's Trudeau 'Stabbed Us In The Back'

The United States and Canada are facing a diplomatic and trade crisis as top White House advisers hurled insults at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday morning, accusing him of "stabbing the USA in the back".

The comments, made after Trump had left to go to Singapore for his much-anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, infuriated the USA president.

A Democratic congressman chastised Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday for "sabotaging" trade negotiations as the fallout from this weekend's tense G7 summit continues, lending President Trump some bipartisan support as the war of words between the two countries escalates.

Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland is seen during the Organization of American States (OAS) 48th General Assembly in the OAS Main Building in Washington, DC, June 4, 2018.

President Donald Trump on Saturday accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making "false statements" and said that the U.S. will not endorse a G7 communique.

Former prime minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, reacts to dispute between Trump and Trudeau at the G7 summit and discusses the North Korea summit on 'Sunday Morning Futures'.

"The European Union had a $151 Billion Surplus-should pay much more for Military!"

Trump took another swipe at his northern neighbour on Sunday, suggesting on Twitter that Canada is "bragging" in an unspecified release about benefiting from USA trade. Trump had backed the statement just hours before. Can't do it in person. "He's a pathetic little man-child", Paris wrote.

"I have made it clear to [President Trump] that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will do", Trudeau said.

Guardiola: 'I'll never manager Barca again'
Do you believe that Barcelona could have done that with (Andres) Iniesta? I came to wonder if it was not because of my colour. The midfielder had to wait until City's final home game of the season against Brighton for his first start of the season.

But Trump said that talks at the summit had been "extremely productive" about trade among other issues.

Trump and Trudeau exchanged barbs after a highly contentious G-7 meeting resulted in a press conference in which Trudeau promised not to be pushed around.

Trump swiftly responded to Trudeau by upending the communiqué in a series of tweets Saturday evening. He told CNN's Jake Tapper that "of course" Trump's tweets about Trudeau actually had to do with North Korea "in large part". Trudeau stuck our president in the back.

Larry Kudlow, director of the U.S. National Economic Council, said on CNN that Trudeau engaged in "betrayal" and "stabbed us in the back".

At one point Kudlow, 70, referred to Canada's leader as "Pierre" Trudeau, confusing the prime minister with his late father, who served in the same capacity for more than 15 years between 1968 and 1984 and died in 2000.

Left unclear was what exactly Mr Trudeau had said that so offended Mr Trump.

"Mr. Trudeau had sought to play down personal clashes with Mr. Trump as he wrapped up the summit, calling the meeting "very successful" and saying he was 'inspired by the discussion.'", the paper adds. "I don't understand the obsession with trade relations with Canada", he said, given that Canada is the biggest single buyer of American goods and services in the world. "We need to stand with our democratic allies".

Trudeau said the communique has "strong commitments about the actions we are going to take".
