U.S. Service Member Killed, 4 Others Wounded in Somalia Attack

Somalia is the easternmost point in the Horn of Africa

The U.S. special operations forces were fighting alongside about 800 troops from the Somali National Security Forces and Kenyan Defence Forces when they were attacked late on Friday by mortars and small arms fire.

Al-Shabab said it stormed a Somali military base near Bosaso in the country's northeast, blew up a USA military vehicle and downed a us surveillance drone.

The US military official said "dozens" of US advisers participated in the overall operation, adding that while the al Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab was known to have influence in the area, the local village was seen as friendly to the federal government.

We also injured four USA soldiers, ' Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab's military operations spokesman said. A U.S. Africa Command statement said the four were in the care of the U.S. Embassy medical team in neighboring Kenya.

The official did not immediately know who had carried out the attack, but the United States is supporting Somali partners as they target Islamic al-Qaeda militants aligned with the Shabaab group.

The combined Somali National Security Forces, Kenya Defense Force and US forces were on a multiday operation in Jubaland, southwest of the capital, Mogadishu, when the attack occurred.

The U.S. has about 500 troops in Somalia, mostly in Special Operations.

That death was followed by an ugly confrontation between President Donald Trump, members of his staff and the widow of one of the soldiers killed. Officials worry the extremist group is in the midst of a resurgence after losing much of the territory it once held in Somalia and many of its fighters in the past several years. Its fighters continue to attack the bases of a multinational African Union force that remains largely responsible for security as Somalia's fragile central government tries to recover from decades of chaos.

The US troops were on a training mission with local Somali and Kenyan forces when the attack occurred.

The Pentagon didn't identify the USA commando who was killed, pending notification of next of kin.

The October attack in Niger raised questions in Washington about the US military presence across Africa as the Trump administration focuses counterterror efforts on a range of groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group. A Pentagon investigation of the incident produced a highly critical report.

Mostly composed of special operators such as Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs and Marine Raiders, the USA forces in Somalia have conducted frequent raids and drone strikes on Shabaab training camps throughout Somalia.
