US citizens living in China received a second alert on Friday over the unexplained health issues that prompted the evacuation of a number of government employees working at a consulate in the southern city of Guangzhou.

The evacuations of workers in Guangzhou followed medical testing that revealed they might have been affected.

"As a result of the screening process so far, the Department has sent a number of individuals for further evaluation and a comprehensive assessment of their symptoms and findings in the United States", she said. A earlier case in Guangzhou, disclosed final month, prompted the checks.

The state department said the symptoms indicated a "mild traumatic brain injury" and they issued a first warning covering only Guangzhou.

The case revived fears that a U.S. rival has developed some kind of acoustic or microwave device after similar symptoms were reported among American diplomats and their families in Cuba in 2016.

A US official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the situation publicly and requested anonymity, told The Associated Press that the evacuees from China were being tested at the University of Pennsylvania, where patients from Cuba were also treated and evaluated. Initially, the USA investigators suspected a sonic attack after people complained of weird, unexplained sounds.

Symptoms have included dizziness, headaches and an inability to concentrate.

Safety guards outdoors the Guangzhou consulate on Thursday informed reporters to go away the realm and never try to speak to consulate employees.

David Rank, the former deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, said if there is an "implication or evidence that this was a state organized activity", it would have a "much bigger impact on our relations".

"At present, there's been no discovery of clues or the reason causing the situation the United States mentioned", Hua told a regular news briefing in Beijing, adding that China protected diplomats according to global convention.

The New York Times reported yesterday that at least two more American diplomats in Guangzhou have experienced similar phenomena and fallen ill.

Lenzi told The Times he lived in the same apartment tower as the officer evacuated in April and suffered in recent months from what he called "neurological symptoms".

Lenzi's condo was in certainly one of a number of high-rise buildings in The Canton Place that includes eating places and galleries spaced round a central plaza. The consulate said it did not know what had caused the symptoms, but was taking the incident "seriously".

Dorsey reports that early Friday morning, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing issued its second health alert, urging Americans with "unexplained physical symptoms" to get medical help, as concerns grew that the mysterious case could be worse than first reported.

In October, the U.S. State Department ordered non-essential embassy workers and their families to evacuate Havana out of concern the mysterious illness was the result of a targeted sonic attack.

The alert urges U.S. citizens across China to seek medical help if they experience any "unusual, unexplained physical symptoms or events, auditory or sensory phenomena, or other health concerns".

The Penn team has said the patients experienced persistent disability though rehabilitation therapy customized for them seemed to help.

Last month, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said USA government employees in China suffered brain injuries linked to "abnormal sounds" resembling still-unexplained injuries suffered by American and Canadian diplomats in Cuba previous year. Former State Department officials and diplomatic experts have pointed to similar incidents causing permanent cognitive issues occurring against USA diplomats in Russian Federation during the Cold War. It is also the only USA diplomatic installation in China authorised to process immigrant visas and handle adoptions.
