Kim Jong Un lookalike questioned in Singapore before summit

Shigeo Iizuka heads a group of families of Japanese abducted by North Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump, in a complete reversal of his last stance, said on June 1 he would hold a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore in the latest twist in the high-stakes diplomacy over eliminating Pyonyang's nuclear arms program. "I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity and he won't have that opportunity again".

Trump hopes to persuade Kim to completely abandon the arsenal of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that the North Koreans have spent generations amassing.

A delicate aspect of the Trump-Kim summit is that the United States is meeting with a de facto nuclear state that desires détente without denuclearization, while the USA wants détente in exchange for denuclearization.

Beijing, the North's only major ally and key economic lifeline, is also ready for a peace agreement, according to William Overholt, an Asia expert and senior fellow at Harvard University, and could "come down very hard on the North" if Pyongyang refuses to abandon its nukes despite potential US offers of a peace treaty, security guarantees, diplomatic recognition and economic assistance.

They'll arrive to "summit fever" across the island territory - with locals selling everything from drinks and tacos to gold medallions to mark Trump's historic huddle with the hermit king. (Carlos Barria/Reuters) North Korea handing over its nuclear weapons, however, is nearly certainly not going to happen at this meeting.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un delivers his New Year's speech at an undisclosed place in North Korea, Jan. 1, 2018, in this photo provided by the North Korean government. So, the president, I can imagine him saying, 'We've agreed on this peace treaty, ' which is what we said in 2005. He also indicated that South Korea, China and Japan would be prepared to invest in the North to boost its besieged economy.

In any case, raising the topic of North Korea's human rights abuses will be necessary as a practical matter.

Calling his trip "a mission of peace", the US President framed the meeting as a rare opportunity for Kim and said the US was going in with a positive outlook.

Recalled melon linked to 60 illnesses was distributed in NC, officials say
The CDC advises consumers to either throw the recalled products in the garbage or return to them to the place of purchase. Although the shelf life of the melon is limited, Kroger said, it issued the alert out of an abundance of caution.

It has since been reconfirmed and with days ago the United States president has returned to his fire-and-fury rhetoric. I think they are starting to be committed to a much more fair trade situation for the United States, because it has been treated very, very unfairly.... And he memorably took the South Korean president by the hand, when they met at the border of their two countries, physically leading him back over into North.

After trying to smooth over tensions with the six other leaders at the summit in Canada, Trump spoke optimistically about his looming meeting and said he believed it would go well, reports Daily Mail.

He said the summit was significant due to the progression of events.

He has not shied from using flattery either - he was the first to say Mr Trump could be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The U.S. and North Korea have disagreed about what "denuclearization" would actually entail.

"It's a one time shot and I think it's going to work out very well", he said.

Yet many close observers doubt the once hostile leader's appetite for peace. The Lowy Institute's worldwide security director Euan Graham says Mr Kim has relied on the classic North Korean playbook, swinging predictably from provocation to engagement. "There's probably an even better chance that it will take a period of time, it'll be a process".
