Top North Korean Official Visits President Trump At White House

Pompeo Strikes Positive Tone After North Korea Meeting in NYC

The opening of a letter from North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, which was hand-delivered by his top aide, Kim Yong-chol, to the president, is vintage Trump.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's meetings Thursday with a top North Korean official ended more than two hours earlier than expected because the talks "went well" and "made progress" in salvaging an on-again, off-again summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a US official said.

President Trump announced Friday that his on-again-off-again meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is once again on.

Kim Yong Chol, the North Korean leader's top aide, is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the USA in 18 years, and his trip to the White House will be a highly symbolic sign of easing tensions after fears of war escalated amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests last year.

"That letter was a very nice letter", Trump said to reporters.

"We are doing very well with North Korea", Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing on a trip to Texas.

Washington has kept the maximum pressure campaign against the DPRK, including slapping severe economic sanctions on the Asian country.

However, his comments were the most positive from any U.S. official since the meeting was axed last week after belligerent statements from the North.

"We also cheer the summits that have already taken place between Pyongyang and Seoul, and the next planned summit between the leaders of North Korea and U.S.", said Lavrov, on his first visit to the North since 2009. Top US officials are often contradicting the US President with national security advisor John Bolton stating that he would like negotiations to be done quickly because a long-term process could wring out concessions from the US, whereas Trump is open to a slower approach.

"I look forward to the day I can take the sanctions off North Korea", Trump said.

Duvernay-Tardif" across the top. "He was trusting me that I was going to be accountable and I was training here (in Montreal)". And I went on a sailboat trip with my parents and my two sisters for three years and those kind of experiences.

The letter was "carefully examined" by the Secret Service for anything potentially risky before the North Korean official was able to deliver it, according to a White House official. But I think they'd like to see something happen and if we can work that out, that would be great.

Trump's announcement came at the end of a almost 80-minute meeting in the Oval Office of the White House with North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol.

As for what this giant letter contained, well, we don't know just yet. I think we're going to have a relationship, and it'll start on June 12.

Kim is expected to president a letter from Kim Jong Un (kim jawng oon), the North Korean dictator, to Trump.

Ahead of the talks, the South Korean side said it planned to use the meeting to reduce tensions across the heavily-armed border and talks to engage with the Red Cross to resume family reunions for people separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

Meanwhile, North and South Korean officials are working to increase communication between the two countries and improve their relations. Based on the talks, Trump said the North Korean leader was committed to denuclearisation. Pompeo had travelled to Washington to meet with General Chol and have discussions on the preparations of the nuclear summit that has been scheduled for June 12. General Kim Yong-Chol landed in the USA the mid-afternoon of Wednesday on board an Air China flight from the Chinese capital of Beijing.

Multi-track talks between the officials of the United States and the DPRK have been held this week in NY, the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and Singapore for the preparations of the on-again-off-again summit.

We can assume that Kim Jong Un's principal interest is to destroy, or to at least weaken, the alliance between the United States and South Korea, a goal that Chinese President Xi Jinping likely shares.

The two countries began military co-operation when North Korea sent around 530 troops including pilots, tank drivers and missile personnel to Syria during the Arab-Israeli war in October 1973.
