SES-12 launch success

SpaceX will live-stream the launch of the Falcon 9 rocket

A new timetable for the flight - now postponed until at least mid-2019 and likely longer - hasn't been released by Space Exploration Technologies Corp., the formal name of the closely held company. The launch was completed just after midnight local time, the satellite was deployed about 32 minutes after takeoff.

SpaceX was hoping to conduct additional tests of the Falcon Heavy rocket with the help of NASA.

The rocket lifted off at 12:45 a.m. and is the second flight for the launcher's first stage, Space.com reports. SES-12 will join SES's network of seven geostationary satellites and 16 MEO satellites across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.

The satellite's lightweight ion propulsion system will slowly but efficiently boost the relay station into a circular orbit 22,300 miles above the equator.

The SES-12 is referred to as two satellites in one, providing broadband data and transmission services to the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region.

This is part of SpaceX's wider goal to make launching rockets similar to commercial flights, where they "can be flown again and again".

SES-12 is the third all-electric satellite built by Airbus in orbit.

"This is one of the largest, if not the largest satellites we've launched", he said. SES-12 is designed for an operational life of some 15 years.

About 27 feet tall and almost 12,000 pounds heavy, Halliwell joked that the spacecraft built by Airbus Defense and Space in France hardly fit into the nose of the Falcon 9 rocket or payload fairing.

The craft, carrying Bangladesh's first communications satellite, the Bangabandhu 1, blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

"We believe there are around about a billion people in the Asia-Pacific market that still don't have good connectivity through the devices you're all holding in your hands right now", Hemingway told reporters last week.
