Facebook 'not aware of any abuse' of data by phone makers

Apple was among the companies that used device-integrated APIs to serve up a version of Facebook on its hardware but the deals are now under scrutiny

Not that this is likely to satisfy Blumenthal and Markey - there's no guarantee they'll take action, but they clearly want more explicit promises of privacy than Facebook has offered so far. In April, Facebook started ending the agreements though majority still remain in effect. "And our partnership and engineering teams approved the Facebook experiences these companies built", he continued. The New York Times says that it discovered that the manufacturers were able to access data from members' friends even if they had specifically banned Facebook from using their data.

'To bridge this gap, we built a set of device-integrated APIs that allowed companies to recreate Facebook-like experiences for their individual devices or operating systems'.

A New York Times investigation published late Sunday revealed the scope of data-sharing deals Facebook struck over the years with companies like Apple, Samsung and Microsoft.

Next, it was déjà data-analytics vu in April, when Facebook suspended a second firm, Cubeyou, for dressing up its personal-data snarfing as "nonprofit academic research", in the form of personality quizzes, and handing over the data to marketers. This was to the extent that some companies could retrieve data on a Facebook user's friends even when such sharing was thought to have been barred.

Apple said it used data pulled in from Facebook to let people post photos and other items on Facebook without opening the Facebook app. It then could access info on 294,258 friends of his friends. Amazon and Samsung refused to comment.

This practice of sharing data with device makers, sans explicit permission, didn't come to a screeching halt because of the Cambridge Analytica scandal that erupted in March. In 2011, the FTC decreed that Facebook is prohibited from overriding users' privacy settings without asking for their consent. A BlackBerry (bb) spokesperson told the paper that the Canadian firm "did not collect or mine the Facebook data of [its] customers". It wouldn't have worked any other way.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Transfer Centre podcast, Sheth said: "If Conte goes, Sarri would be the favourite to take over". There were tough moments during the season and although I was sometimes whistled at, I want to thank the fans.

The agency is already investigating if Facebook ran afoul of that accord in another matter: allowing a political consultancy, Cambridge Analytica, to access 87 million users' personal data, including the pages they had "liked" on the site. Microsoft (msft) said any data its software got from Facebook stayed on users' devices and was not uploaded to its own servers.

Facebook on a Nokia C3, also from 2010. That kind of arrangement was necessary before phone operating systems relied on app stores, it added. Before that, Apple dictated what was on iPhones.

According to the Washington Post, "Vladeck said additional penalties could include a court-ordered monitor of Facebook's business practices, injunctions against particular ways of using of consumers' data or heightened monitoring by the FTC".

"These partners signed agreements that prevented people's Facebook information from being used for any other goal than to recreate Facebook-like experiences", Facebook wrote.

The NYT's test of an older non-Android BlackBerry device yielded these numbers.

According to The New York Times, Facebook did this even after it declared it would no longer share such "deep access" with external companies.

In other words, the Hub was doing exactly what it was meant to do, and Facebook gave BlackBerry a private API so that it could function as designed.
