YouTube most popular social media among teens in 2018

Facebook edged out of top 3 social networks by U.S. teens

YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat have emerged as the most popular online hangouts for USA teens, surpassing the once-dominant Facebook, according to a new study released today by Pew Research Center.

Teenagers have abandoned Facebook in favour of other social media platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram, according to a study from the Pew Research Center. YouTube leads the way with 85 percent, followed by Instagram with 72 percent and Snapchat with 69 percent.

In the previous survey, websites like YouTube and Reddit weren't included as options.

While Facebook may have lost its reign among the teenage demographic to Google-owned YouTube, it has owned the rising favourite Instagram, a photo and video-sharing networking service, since 2012.

Research firm eMarketer published early march, and noted that Snapchat attracted more young at a faster rate than Instagram.

Meanwhile, the numbers for Twitter and Tumblr remained largely unchanged compared to the results found in 2015, standing at 32 and 14 percent popularity respectively.

European Union joins battle vs.Trump tariffs
The administration is taking the action under a relatively obscure USA trade law meant to protect national security . Fears of a global trade war are already weighing on investor confidence and could hinder the global economic upturn.

That's a drop from 2015, when Pew found that 71 percent of teens were Facebook users. Around 70 percent of teens from those households use Facebook. For majority, Mark Zuckerberg's social media platform is designed more for older individuals who wish to reconnect with their old friends.

Last year, the analyst firm Piper Jaffray reported that Snapchat, known originally for his video messages are ephemeral, was the favorite social network of teenagers of americans, 47% of them using this platform.

When it comes to the platform they access most frequently throughout the day, Snapchat is king.

Pew Research's survey revealed that 95 percent of teenagers in the United States own or have access to a smartphone, and 88 percent own or have access to a desktop or laptop computer.

"It has a negative impact on social (in-person) interactions", a 17-year-old boy told researchers. For them, social media has a negative effect on how teens interact in-person.

Usage of the internet has gone up overall among teenagers, with 45 percent reporting that they use it almost constantly, compared to just 24 percent three years ago.
