He had told the Kansas City Star that this was the previous year he was eligible to pass his exams.

On Tuesday, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif added a new line to a resume that already includes his occupation as a player for the Kansas City Chiefs - his graduation from McGill Medical School makes him a physician. "It kind of gives you perspective".

"During the pre-draft interviews, Coach Reid was like, 'This is awesome what you're trying to do, and I'm going to help you to the best of my ability, ' " Duvernay-Tardif said.

"He's trying to make me the best player on the field", he said.

The next step is a residency. He said being a part-time resident might be hard, but he's managed to find away in the past. But Duvernay-Tardif's story is fascinating, even by National Football League standards.

Duvernay-Tardif said his parents, Guylaine Duvernay and François Tardif, provided him with the support he needed in his unconventional pursuit of a dual career because his childhood was anything but conventional. And I went on a sailboat trip with my parents and my two sisters for three years and those kind of experiences. I learned to live for the project and not for the money, and I'm grateful to my parents for teaching me that way of living.

"I think it's important to build a career that you're going to be able to do a long time", Duvernay-Tardif told reporters after his graduation ceremony. "I want to try and inspire as many kids as I can and show them it's possible to combine a passion for sport and high education at the same time".

Pro football players are often stereotyped as being unintelligent, but given that the 32 NFL rosters all include 53 players, not to mention those on injured reserve, the league is actually rather eclectic when it comes to education.

The 6-foot-5 right guard shared a photo of himself in a white coat on Tuesday, which was emblazoned with a signature Chiefs red and gold 76 and "Dr. Duvernay-Tardif" across the top. "He was trusting me that I was going to be accountable and I was training here (in Montreal)".
