Afghan troops free prisoners held by Taliban; bomb wounds 6

The Afghan forces have eliminated all the assailants involved in the coordinated attack on the Ministry of Interior compound in Kabul

An attack on Afghanistan's Interior Ministry in Kabul has been repelled with one policeman and all of the attackers being killed in the latest in a series of militant attacks in the city.

Two loud explosions and gunfire were heard coming from the vicinity of the ministry compound and police officials inside said they believed it was a terror attack. "We will release more details later", interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish told AFP, in a statement echoed by police.

U.S. Forces in Afghanistan reported that more than 50 Taliban senior leaders, including the deputy Taliban shadow governor of Helmand, was killed in a targeted strike using rocket artillery.

Along with the strike on Musa Qala, other senior and junior commanders have been killed in a ten-day operation against the Taliban, the United States spokesperson said.

The Western-backed government in Kabul has been struggling to fend off the Taliban and other militant groups since the withdrawal of most North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops in 2014.

Also on Wednesday a vehicle bomb in the southern city of Kandahar went off inside a garage where Afghan army vehicles were being repaired, killing three mechanics and wounding 13 people, governor's spokesman Daud Ahmadi said.

The country will spend 886 million New Zealand dollars (Rs 4,150 crore) over two years on the effort to eradicate the disease. It is unclear whether she made any mention of the 150,000 cows set to die as part of the eradication attempt.

The violence left at least four security forces members dead, according to officials.

After pushing out fighters in Farah, Afghan and USA forces continued to pursue them, Nicholson told reporters at the Pentagon via video link.

"But our police said that at least two civilians were either killed or injured in today's attack", he said. Three would-be suicide bombers then tried to enter the compound, but were shot and killed by security forces.

"It's certainly a notable strike", he said, adding that several other senior and lower level commanders had been killed during operations over a 10-day period this month.

It appeared to be a rare victory for Afghan security forces, who have struggled to secure the capital in recent months.

The Islamic State group's Afghanistan affiliate claimed responsibility for the attack via its Aamaq news agency. The Taliban have threatened to attack voter registration centres.

The Ministry of Interior moved to the new building previous year - a building which is close to main military bases including the Ministry of Defense and the National Directorate of Security as well as the Hamid Karzai International Airport.
