'Dead' Russian journalist turns up at press conference

Russian journalist Babchenko attends an interview in Kiev

Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian lawmaker who also moved to Ukraine, said Babchenko continued to be threatened after he settled a year ago in Kiev, where he worked as a host for the Crimean Tatar TV station.

Ukraine said it staged the murder of a Russian journalist critical of the Kremlin in order to catch people who'd actually been plotting to kill him.

He showed up at Gritsak's new conference on Wednesday and thanked everyone who was mourning his death. "I'm sorry you had to go through this but there was no other way", he said.

Babchenko had been reportedly shot in the back in his apartment in Kyiv on Tuesday, dying in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

One person is reportedly in Ukrainian custody, but the news has prompted confusion in Ukraine and a backlash from Russian Federation which was widely accused of ordering Babchenko murder.

The Investigative Committee of Russian Federation had said it had opened a criminal case into Babchenko's death.

However, the journalist has appeared at a news conference in Ukraine.

Babchenko, one of Russia's best-known war correspondents, had left Russia fearing for his life after criticising Russian policy in Ukraine and Syria.

Italy's PM-designate gives up on forming government after president rejects cabinet
Similar harsh views were expressed by the leader of Lega, Matteo Salvini , who charged the president of ignoring the popular will. Mattarella "didn't give the center-right the chance to form a government because we didn't have the votes, and now Mr.

Neither he nor Grytsak, head of the Ukrainian Security Service, provided details of how they staged Babchenko's injuries or made his wife believe he was dead.

Russia's foreign ministry expressed relief at Babchenko being alive. The SBU said Russian Federation paid the would-be assassin $30,000 to carry out the hit.

"We managed not only to break this cynical provocation, but also to document the preparation of this shameful crime by Russian special services", SBU chief Vasyl Hrytsak said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described allegations by Ukrainian government officials that Moscow was behind the murder as "the height of cynicism" and said he hoped other countries would lean on Kiev to do more to protect journalists.

In March of the same year, former Russian MP Denis Voronenkov was shot dead outside a hotel in Kiev.

No stranger to death, Babchenko served in the Russian army during Chechnya's two wars for independence, after which he wrote a powerful memoir about the everyday brutality of conflict before turning to journalism, writing about war for a range of Russian publications. On February 27 past year, he wrote on Facebook that he had left Russian Federation.

What some are calling Ukraine's fake news operation comes just months after heightened tensions between Russia and the United Kingdom over allegations Moscow used a nerve agent to poison Sergei Skripal, a former Russian double agent, and his daughter.
