Tesla in Autopilot Mode Crashes Into Police Car

Tesla in Autopilot mode crashes into parked Laguna Beach police cruiser

"When using Autopilot, drivers are continuously reminded of their responsibility to keep their hands on the wheel and maintain control of the vehicle at all times". Tesla's autopilot system uses sensors, cameras, and radar to study the vehicle's surroundings and carry out automatic functions which include emergency braking.

Cota also said that a year ago, there had been another incident involving a Tesla colliding with a semi-truck in the same area.

The Laguna Beach crash is the latest in a string of similar accidents.

Earlier this month, a vehicle in autopilot mode crashed into a stopped firetruck near Salt Lake City, Utah, injuring two people.

Among accidents to make headlines was a fiery March crash in California that involved its "Autopilot" feature.

Tesla has said the use of Autopilot results in 40 percent fewer crashes, a claim the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration repeated in a 2017 report on the first fatality, which occurred in May 2016. According to the vehicle's data, it sped up just before hitting the truck and the driver hit the brakes seconds before impact.

At the time of the collision, no cops were in the vehicle.

Will Power Wins 2018 Indianapolis 500
The temperature at Indianapolis Motor Speedway hit 33 degrees early in the afternoon, equaling the hottest 500 on record. Danica Patrick's professional driving career came to a close on Sunday after crashing out of the Indianapolis 500 .

According to local media, police said the woman at the wheel of the vehicle claimed it was in a self-driving mode and that her attention was on her phone.

Tesla's Autopilot is a semi-autonomous system that enables vehicles to drive themselves in certain conditions.

The news comes after two United States rights groups urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Tesla over its marketing of the assisted driving software.

The chief executive of Tesla, Elon Musk, has previously complained abut media attention on Tesla crashes.

Cota said the luxury electric auto crashed in nearly the same place as another Tesla about a year ago.

The crash comes as Tesla has been facing scrutiny involving Autopilot. In the settlement, Tesla will pay the customers $20 to $280 and put $5 million into a fund for lawyers' fees and other costs in the case.
