Daniel Ricciardo wins the 2018 Monaco GP

Brendon Hartley

Lewis Hamilton thinks it is unlikely Monaco Grand Prix victor Daniel Ricciardo will be his Mercedes teammate in 2019.

There was some late drama when Monaco-born Charles Leclerc crashed into the back of the Toro Rosso of Brendon Hartley which led to the deployment of the virtual safety auto. Sergio Perez was ninth fastest with Pierre Gasly rounding off the top 10 for Toro Rosso.

Fortunately Ricciardo managed to fend off multiple challenges from Ferrari Sebastian Vettel who eventually crossed the line second some 7.3 seconds back. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finished third and still remains the overall leader in the drivers' championship. I mean, there were times I was really cruising but, y'know, the circuit allows you to do that because it's hard to overtake but I don't think we'll be able to maintain that kind of rhythm on a circuit like Montreal or something. "That was the most boring race I've ever taken part in".

Ricciardo was denied a certain victory at the principality two years ago when his team botched up a regulation pit stop, and his triumph hung in the balance for much of the two hours. By mid-race, the top five drivers were separated by only a few corners. The problem will have created many incidental side effects such as his tyres cooling down through lack of braking energy, and not using up his fuel so the auto being heavier than desired at the end of the race.

Vettel conceded he didn't have the package to take it to Ricciardo. Were Ferrari attempting to use Raikkonen as a pawn to aid Vettel's race yet again? Maybe we need two races?' "But Daniel had the answers all the time".

Where else can I follow the Monaco Grand Prix?

Ricciardo, who started from pole position, controlled the pace right from the start, despite the hybrid system (MGU-K) in his vehicle failing on lap 26. At the restart I didn't have much confidence in the tyres, I lost quite a lot.

Verstappen is sixth in the drivers' standings with 35 points, 37 adrift of Ricciardo after six races.

"Congratulations to Daniel", said Hamilton. He immediately fell into the clutches of Vettel, who went into full-on attack mode.

That said, the Briton, who is now engaged in his own contract negotiations with Mercedes, expects him to earn much more in future. It was yet another mistake from the Kiwi in what is becoming a run of missed opportunities for the Le Mans victor.

The McLaren driver was struck by the Williams of Sergey Sirotkin on the opening lap in Baku, forcing Alonso to limp back to the pits.

"A tough old race out there", Hartley said.

"So it was like, okay we are likely to ingest a whole bunch of shrapnel from the MGU-K so we should stop the engine, but I said no let's keep running and if it stops it stops, we are leading the Monaco Grand Prix".
