An End to Iran Defeatism

Parties Meet Amid Slim Hopes of Saving Iran Nuclear Deal

"It's about changing the behavior of the leadership in Iran to comport with what the Iranian people really want them to do", he added. Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano has confirmed Iran's commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Russia Permanent Representative to the Vienna-based international organizations Mikhail Ulyanov said on Friday after an extraordinary session of the JCPOA's Joint Commission.

But this has proven hard, with many European firms alarmed at the specter of far-reaching USA financial penalties.

Nations that remain in the agreement - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - began meetings on Friday for the first time since Trump left the pact, but diplomats see limited scope for salvaging it.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran's deputy foreign minister, told reporters in Vienna that Tehran was negotiating with the other signatories to "to see if they can provide us with a package which can give Iran the benefits of sanctions lifting".

The talks between senior officials aimed at fleshing out the package of measures to keep oil and investments flowing.

The decision comes after the US announced it would unilaterally withdraw and threatened sanctions against companies who trade with Iran.

If it pulls out of the deal, Iran would likely revert to its nuclear doctrine before the agreement or maybe even escalate its activities, the official said.

He said European measures would need to ensure that oil exports did not halt, and that Iran would still have access to the SWIFT worldwide bank payments messaging system.

Hero Science Teacher Reportedly Tackled and Disarmed Indiana School Shooter
A student at the middle school said he saw his science teacher tackle a fellow student who fired shots inside the classroom. He is reportedly in the seventh grade. "We are still conducting interviews to determine what happened in that classroom".

Poland's Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said Warsaw - a staunch ally of Washington - had not decided yet whether to back the ban, potentially complicating a decision that needs unanimous backing from the EU's 28 members.

Tehran has threatened to restart its uranium enrichment program at an "industrial level" if the 2015 pact falls apart.

Speaking ahead of the Vienna talks, the Iranian official said that for his country to stay in the deal, the relief granted would have to be guaranteed by the other parties involved and that Tehran needs specifics on how that will happen by the end of May. "We'll try to cling to the deal hoping that there is a possibility of a transaction, but we're under no illusions".

Iran wants European powers to present it with measures by the end of May to compensate it for the United States abandoning the 2015 nuclear deal, a senior official said on Friday, and Tehran would decide within weeks whether to quit the accord. The idea of framing the issue as either you support the deal or you have a cataclysmic war with Iran is wrong.

"We need both legal and political commitments by the remaining participants of the JCPOA, that they can continue the JCPOA with Iran without the USA and they can provide Iran with the benefits of sanction-lifting", stated Araghchi.

The world's top oil trader said it will be near impossible to avoid USA sanctions on Iran, suggesting Donald Trump's attack on OPEC's third-largest producer may have a bigger impact on the global crude market than many anticipate. However, the officials said the USA decision to reinstate financial sanctions on Iran would not impact India's oil imports as long as European countries did not follow suit. With the re-imposition of such sanctions, Iran will no longer have any incentive to stick to its part of the nuclear deal.

Elsewhere, he said that Ansallorah movement in Yemen agreed to establish a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramdan, but the Saudis refused.
