After Kerala, Nipah virus suspected in Himachal Pradesh

Nipah virus infection in humans has a range of clinical presentations from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory syndrome and fatal encephalitis

With the deaths due to the deadly Nipah virus being reported so far from northern Kerala, the state government has issued an advisory, asking travellers to avoid visiting the four districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kannur. This Kerala PSC decision is happening after Kerala Government has made a decision to not to conduct any public programmes in Kozhikode after the outbreak of Nipah virus, which has claimed 12 lives so far.

"They are not confirmed Nipah cases yet, so there is no need to panic", he said by telephone.

Nipah virus was identified for the first time in parts of Singapore and Malaysia in 1999 but outbreaks have now also occurred in Kerala and Bangladesh.

The Kerala cabinet is set to offer a government job to the husband of the nurse who died treating Nipah Virus patients.

The first death from the disease was reported on Friday, with health officials traced back to a well infested with diseased bats.

The patients are being treated and samples of their blood have been sent for screening, with results expected by Thursday, he added.

"People have been advised to keep distance from bats and pigs".
