Subtropical Storm Alberto to strengthen over next 48 hours: NHC

Tropical depression formation expected Saturday

The subtropical storm, located off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, formed Friday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center. It has winds of 40 miles per hour and is moving to the north-northeast at 6 miles per hour.

As of 2 p.m., Subtropical Storm Alberto — which formed Friday morning — was almost stationary about 60 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, and had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

Heavy rain will be the biggest threat from Invest 90-L for the Tampa Bay area.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a new tropical system that will bring heavy rain to Florida and the Gulf Coast states by Memorial Day. Rainfall accmumulations of 4 to 8 inches with maximum amounts of 12 inches are possible across the Florida Keys and southern and southwestern Florida.

Late in the forecast, Alberto is expected to significantly slow down as it approaches the coast.

The Government of Cuba has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. "However, environmental conditions are then forecast to become more conducive for development, and a subtropical or tropical depression could form this weekend over the eastern or central Gulf of Mexico". The last time a tropical cyclone was named Alberto was in 2012; it also formed before the season began, on May 19. Winds also increase along Florida's East Coast due to the pressure gradient between the storm and the Atlantic ridge.

Their latest outlook has Central Georgia receiving 5-7 inches of rain.

So, what in the world is a "Subtropical Storm?"

The National Hurricane Center has named a disturbance in the Caribbean Sea. Six lists are used in rotation. The storms could create localized flooding and deadly lighting strikes. This year, Sara will replace the now-retired Sandy.

Saturday will start out cloudy with scattered showers, but nothing too our of the ordinary as Alberto will still be far to our south. The government of Cuba has issued a tropical storm watch for the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.

However, those cones only show the projected path of the storm's center. Tropical storm and storm surge watches could be required for portions of the area later today or tonight.

Subtropical storms, like Alberto, can develop into tropical storms, which can ultimately strengthen into hurricanes. Now it seems that is likely within the next five days as it tracks north over the Yucatán Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico.
