Harvey Weinstein surrenders to police in sexual assault probe

Harvey Weinstein turns himself in to police

The disgraced Hollywood mogul turned himself in earlier that day, and was charged with rape, committing a criminal sex act, sexual abuse and sexual misconduct.

Prosecutors said the former movie mogul "used his position, money and power" to allegedly lure young women and abuse them sexually, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported. Weinstein, who had been staring grimly ahead, grimaced and raised his eyebrows as he heard her words. He denies having non-consensual sex and has reportedly been in treatment for sex addiction.

As Harvey Weinstein surrendered to NY authorities Friday to face criminal sex charges, some of his 80-plus accusers and other celebrities shared their thoughts on social media. More than 80 allegations have been leveled at Weinstein since last fall.

"We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you", actor Rose McGowan tweeted on Friday, as Weinstein sat in court. Asked "what can you say?" he mildly shook his head and softly said "no".

More than 70 women have accused the co-founder of the Miramax film studio and Weinstein of sexual misconduct, including rape, with some allegations dating back decades.

The reports surfaced with the Manhattan District Attorney's office and NY police department have been investigating Weinstein for months. At the time, Evans was a college student with hopes of becoming an actress.

The Reuters news agency said the rape charge relates to a woman who was not identified. Film actress Rose McGowan said Weinstein raped her in 1997 in Utah, "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992 and Norwegian actress Natassia Malthe said he attacked her in a London hotel room in 2008.

He will "vigorously defend himself", his lawyer said, arguing that his interactions with women were always consensual and that Weinstein "did not invent the casting couch".

Several sources familiar with the investigation tell NBC News the rape charges stem from a complaint made by an anonymous woman.

How will the Iran deal collapse impact crude prices
"The deal and the lifting of sanctions in 2015 marked the return of European business to Iran ". In Tuesday's meetings, Europe and Iran sought to preserve the landmark agreement.

Godbold went public with a partial account of her encounters with Weinstein when allegations were first published in the New York Times in October. "I tried to get away, but maybe I didn't try hard enough".

Still, McGowan, continued, "I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him".

He has until Wednesday to decide whether to testify before a grand jury.

The police passed the case to prosecutors. That investigation is in its preliminary stages.

The charges come months after he was toppled from Hollywood's most powerful ranks by scores of women accusing him of misconduct. Several actresses and models accused him of criminal sexual assaults, but numerous encounters happened too long ago for any prosecution. Film actress Rose McGowan said Weinstein raped her in 1997 in Utah, "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992 and Norwegian actress Natassia Malthe said he attacked her in a London hotel room in 2008.

"If I'm allowed to, I will attend", McGowan told the AP. Because it's all true.

"The conversation will keep getting deeper", she said. However, the decision, which came to light in the New Yorker article, resulted in a backlash against Vance, who was accused by some of being too soft on a powerful individual, in an office that routinely prosecutes misdemeanor sex crimes with less evidence.

NY police have also confirmed a credible rape allegation against Weinstein after "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta accused him of raping her twice at her NY apartment in late 2010.
