Frisco named fastest-growing city in country

Hempstead Town Hall

But we leapfrogged Los Angeles into the 9th spot for population density among the 50 largest cities in the country, now with more than 8,600 people per square mile. Houston, which clocks out at 2.3 million residents, only grew by an estimated 8,235.

Nationally, eight of the 15 cities with the largest gains were in the South, and three of the top five were in Texas.

Brookhaven Town, the county's most populous, saw a decline of 591, or -0.12 percent.

Paral said that the estimates display population trends that have taken place in Chicago the last few years: African Americans are leaving the city while immigration slows down and wealthier people move in.

While working on the city's urban growth boundary expansion in 2016, the city used the population data to predict 115,063 residents by 2028. New Braunfels - located between San Antonio and Austin - ranked as the country's second-fastest-growing city. The city's population hit an estimated 725,000, gaining 17,500 people from July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017.

"While the loss is minor from the standpoint of the city's total population, consistent population decline is a clear sign that the city is deficient in areas that typically attract and retain residents, investments and other products of healthy economic factors", said Alden Loury, director of research at the Metropolitan Planning Council. But experts warn that doesn't necessarily mean the exodus from the city and state is about to end.

Elsewhere in the state, Frisco and Austin continue to see increases.

Texas Mulls School Safety Days After Mass Shooting
The father of the Texas school shooting suspect is shedding new light on his son's state of mind prior to the attack. It is the latest in a string of mass shootings which have reignited debate about United States gun-control laws.

Another trend emerging in the census data: An increasing number of big US cities have lost population over the last few years.

But here's some perspective: Seattle's population increased by 114,000 in the first seven years of this decade - that's around the same amount it grew in the previous 30 years, back to 1980.

Two other North Texas cities made the fastest-growing list, too.

Several maps are available with additional data for housing unit change by county: Difference in Housing Unit Change by County and Percentage Change in Housing Units by County.

The census figures are based on estimates that are later adjusted as more data are analyzed.

In June 2018, the Census Bureau will release 2017 population estimates by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin for the nation, states and counties.
