Events around Carroll County set to honor Memorial Day

Memorial Day services announced for the area

On Monday, the Hesson-Snider American Legion Post 120, 9 Broad St., will hold a service at 2 p.m. UU., With the 15th president of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, acting as the grand marshal of the parade.

Jeremy Musgrove, a junior studying Spanish and environmental sciences who served in the Marine Corps for five years and works at the Veterans Success Center, talked about the importance of this holiday.

The guest speaker for this year's Walton County Memorial Day Service will be Thomas T. Remington, who served as a U.S. Army infantry platoon commander in Vietnam.

American Legion Post 971, will meet at 1 p.m.

The dedication of a new grave marker, words from a guest speaker and the playing of taps will be a part of the ceremony. Welcome address by Dee Fladwood, West Lawn Memorial Park; "The National Anthem" will be sung by Park High School student Christina Dressler; the Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Dee Fladwood; invocation given by Chaplain Dan Neiman, American Legion Post No. 494; "America The Beautiful" will be sung by Park High School student Christina Dressler; and the keynote speaker will be David Wiedenkeller as Francis Scott Key. A chicken barbecue will be held from noon until sold out at Dunkirk Memorial American Legion Post 62, 211 Central Ave.in Dunkirk.

A Memorial Day program will be held at the cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday.

The Veterans Tribute Tower Committee will host the traditional Memorial Day Ceremony on the Cemetery Green surrounding the Veterans Tribute Tower and flagpole. The Police Department Honor Guard will fire a ceremonial volley and a memorial wreath will be placed at the cemetery event, and the guest speaker at the 11 a.m. event will be retired Air Force Lt. Col. Charles "Chip" Carroll.

10 a.m. -4 p.m. - Friends of Lake Mattoon will have a celebration at Lake Mattoon Beach, near Neoga. At about 11:25 a.m. a B-25 and other support aircraft from the Estrella Warbirds will fly over the ceremony.

Celina - 9 a.m.

Roseville: 10 a.m. Monday at Soldier's Rest, Roselawn Cemetery, 803 W. Larpenteur Ave. May 28 at Shawnee Cemetery, sponsored by American Legion Plymouth.

Chatham: town of Chatham Memorial Day ceremony, 10 a.m., Community Center, 702 Main St. Participants will include members of Chatham VFW and American Legion, the Chatham Coast Guard Color Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and Scout troops.

Gum Creek Cemetery marks the final resting place of veterans from numerous American wars, with 12 known Civil War veterans and one confirmed Seminole War veteran.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, there will be food, music, skydivers and fireworks. An open house will follow at the VFW Post 2535 hall.

"Memorial Day is the day we honor our heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country", said Rear Admiral Frank Thorp. The parade will not re-form, but streets will remain blocked to allow safe foot traffic back to the library.

In Calaveras County there's a Memorial Day Concert planned 6:30 p.m.to 8 p.m. Monday at Murphys Community Park. Refreshments and light luncheon will follow the last ceremony at the legion, 109 S. Fifth St.

"The parade will start at the McClain High School colonnades on Fifth Street and continue to the Greenfield Cemetery with a ceremony by the Concerned Veterans", G3 member Shari Royse-Bellar said.
