Pompeo: 'Bad deal' with North Korea 'not an option' for US

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

"If the right deal is not on the table, we will respectfully walk away", Pompeo said in his opening remarks for a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.

The former Central Intelligence Agency director, who has met twice with Kim since the start of April, told the committee that it's his hope that when Trump and Kim confer, "we can get the North Koreans to make this strategic shift about how best to serve the country - that the nuclear weapons program isn't in fact the thing that keeps the regime in power, but the thing that prevents the regime from being in a place it wants to be with economic success".

"This could be something that comes right to the end and doesn't happen", said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"Whatever it is, we'll know next week", he said, speaking to the press at the White House.

Yesterday, Mr Trump said there was a "substantial chance" the summit would not take place as planned.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday he's "very hopeful" that a planned U.S.

North Korea has insisted it won't give up its nuclear weapons program without major concessions from the U.S. Presenting the latest formulation of U.S. policy, Pompeo told the House panel, "Our posture will not change until we see credible steps taken toward the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula".

A handful of foreign journalists from China, the US, Britain, Russia and South Korea were invited to attend the demolition ceremony.

Punggye-ri has been the site for all six of the North's nuclear tests, the latest and by far the most powerful in September past year, which Pyongyang said was a Hydrogen bomb. On his most recent trip he brought back three Americans who had been held by North Korea. Last week, a senior North Korean official said that position was not acceptable to Pyongyang, raising doubts over whether the summit would happen. North Korean media also deployed harsh rhetoric in response to joint military exercises between the USA and South Korea, which take place each spring.

"North Korea must use this opportunity to enter the global community and focus on economic development".

Pompeo on Monday detailed 12 demands that Trump expects Iran to meet as part of a new deal he hopes to negotiate, and that the USA would impose the toughest sanctions in history to bring that about. -South Korean "Max Thunder" air combat drills.

The North has portrayed the destruction on the test site as a goodwill gesture ahead of planned June 12 summit between Kim and Trump in Singapore.

Juventus win 7th consecutive Seria A title
Juve's Paulo Dybala had a goal ruled out for offside in a close decision and also had late penalty appeals waved away. Juventus was six points clear a month ago but had its advantage slashed to a point in the space of a week.

On Seoul's streets Wednesday, South Koreans were circumspect about whether they thought Pyongyang was genuine.

Analysts saw North Korea's perceived slow peddling as evidence of what they feared all along, that Pyongyang may have been playing for time - hoping to ease sanctions and "maximum pressure", or of South Korea over torquing the prospects of a deal. "And if we go, I think it will be a great thing for North Korea".

Pompeo said a US -led sanctions pressure campaign on Pyongyang would not be eased until North Korea gives up nuclear weapons.

North Korea has rejected unilateral disarmament and given no indication it is willing to go beyond statements of broad support for the concept of universal denuclearization.

The White House was caught off guard when, in a dramatic change of tone, North Korea last week condemned the latest U.S.

He called denuclearization of North Korea "our top national security priority".

America's superpower rivals were tracking the developments closely.

Ahead of the North Korea meeting, the president has been nearly singularly focused on the pageantry of the summit -including the suspenseful roll-out of details, senior administration officials said.

They are expected to meet their North Korean counterparts and iron out details of the meeting.

In February the Security Council sanctions committee granted approval for a North Korean delegation, specifically United Nations -sanctioned senior official Choe Hwi, to travel to South Korea for the opening of the Winter Olympics.

White House aides are preparing to travel to Singapore this weekend for a crucial meeting with North Korean officials to discuss the agenda and logistics for the summit, US officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Russian Federation announced Wednesday that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel to North Korea for a visit on May 31.
