On 22 May 2017 a suicide bomber detonated a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb as people were leaving Manchester Arena following a concert by the then 23-year-old singer.

Afterwards, Prince William met privately with some of the bereaved families and left a handwritten message on a Tree of Hope.

It's been one year since a bombing took the lives of many Ariana Grande fans in England.

The ceremony included a national silence at 2.30pm to allow the country to remember those who died.

"The targeting of the young and innocent as they enjoyed a carefree night out. was an act of sickening cowardice", Theresa May wrote in the city's local paper the Manchester Evening News.

"It was created to strike at the heart of our values and our way of life in one of our most vibrant cities, with the aim of breaking our resolve and dividing us". "Thinking of you all today and every day", she wrote, with an emoji of the bumblebee which is a symbol of Manchester.

Later, thousands of people - including a choir of attack survivors - gathered for a concert and sing-song in the city's Albert Square.

"The last thing I would ever want is for my fans to see something like that happen and think it won", she said.

Paul also paid tribute to soldier Lee Rigby, who was killed in a terrorist attack near the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, London, five years ago on May 22, 2013.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said it was a day to "come together".

Another passerby told him: "We're all the same wherever we are".

The singalong came after a day of events to mark the first anniversary of the horrific event, including a service at Manchester Cathedral - including a one-minute silence observed across the United Kingdom - and a gathering in the city on Tuesday evening (22.05.18).

Flowers left by people as they pay their respects in St Annes Square on the 1st anniversary.

Around an hour and a half later, at 10.31pm, bells on Manchester Town Hall, St Ann's Church, and St Mary's RC Church rang to mark the time the bomb went off one year ago.
