Iran FM Meets Mogherini as Part of Efforts to Save Nuclear Deal

European Council President Donald Tusk speaks during a media conference prior to an EU-Western Balkans summit at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia Bulgaria Wednesday

As a first step, the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Britain were in Brussels on Tuesday for talks with their Iranian counterpart.

According to her, the European side recalled its dedication to the continued, full and effective implementation of the nuclear deal with Iran, which was unanimously approved by the United Nations security Council resolution No. 2231 as a key element of the global architecture of nuclear non-proliferation.

Later, in an interview with the official news agency IRNA on his way back to Tehran, Zarif said that the European parties to the JCPOA work hard to preserve the deal and limit the impact of U.S. withdrawal on Europe's trade with Iran.

JCPOA is an acronym for Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the agreement under which Iran agreed to cap uranium enrichment at below the level needed to make nuclear weapons, and to allow intrusive global inspections to ensure compliance, in return for the lifting of crippling financial sanctions.

"We are under no illusions about the stuff Iran gets up to in the region, in the Middle East".

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has met with European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini as the Europeans seek to keep the Iran nuclear agreement.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has acknowledged that the Iran nuclear deal "certainly has weaknesses" but says it should be preserved.

Iran said it will not continue the implementation of the JCPOA without receiving enough ‎guarantees from three European countries, including the UK, France, and Germany.

`With Friends Like These:' EU's Tusk Blasts Trump's Europe View

As Javier Blas, a chief energy correspondent at Bloomberg News, noted in his tweet, "France is floating European financing tools to bypass United States sanctions on Iran (including ideas to use the European Investment Bank, the European Central Bank or ad-hoc instruments to trade)". "We are on the right path to move forward", he said.

The European Commission has been examining measures to counter the introduction of any USA sanctions that could harm European businesses.

"We will also hold a Joint Commission meeting in Vienna next week at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers or Political Directors - which is the usual level at which the Joint Commission meets - and obviously in the coming days we will continue to work along these lines following the good exchanges we had today", she went on.

The crux of the matter is that the yuan-denominated transactions are non-transparent for USA financial regulators, the economist pointed out, assuming that Chinese and European consumers could use Shanghai as a "black box" to evade United States sanctions while buying Iranian crude.

Arriving earlier on Tuesday in the Belgian capital, he said: "We think it (the JCPOA) has value, we continue to believe in it even though America has chose to walk away".

Juncker is set to jet off to Sofia, Bulgaria, for a working dinner with EU leaders on the eve of the EU-Western Balkan summit.

They also include the so-called "blocking statute", an European Union regulation dating back from 1996 that says that European Union companies "should not" take into account decisions by non-EU jurisdictions on some issues - mainly the USA embargo against Cuba.
