UFC 224 results: Nunes breaks Pennington's nose and retains title

Amanda Nunes

Since prying the title from Miesha Tate at UFC 200, she now holds victories over Ronda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko and Pennington.

Nunes remained in control on the most of the fight, simply proving herself to be the better striker.

Amanda Nunes utilized some nasty low kicks to batter the legs of her opponent early and often throughout the course of their championship bout. Unfortunately, a severe leg injury slowed Pennington's pace and put her out of action for over a year and a half.

As the round moved forward, Nunes continued to land those kicks with Pennington's leg turning different multiple shades of purple and red as a result.

Speaking at a post-fight press conference, Nunes criticised Pennington's corner.

Nunes had the clear advantage from the outset of the first round. Pennington managed to take Nunes down in the second round, but the champion managed to get back to her feet and withstood a solid combination. The challenger could snatch a guillotine as Nunes tries to take her down.

At the end of the third round, Pennington had noticeable swelling surrounding her left eye.

The people she pays to protect her in moments like this told her to go back out for the last five minutes, imploring her to finish the fight.

Pennington is engaged to UFC strawweight Tecia Torres, who used to train with Nunes in South Florida.

A knee to the face likely broke Pennington's nose, with blood spilling down the American's face.

None of those coaches, however, go by the name Brad Stevens . "And the guy that should have won got it". So while they may believe multiple coaches are worthy, there's only one option.

Nunes threw her hands up in celebration as she earned the TKO stoppage at 2:36 into the fifth and final round.

The successful title defense is Nunes' third consecutive one.

Once the fight was over, Nunes called Pennington and her fiancée Tecia Torres to join her in the Octagon where she addressed how hard this fight was for her.

"It's sad. (My girlfriend) Nina (Ansaroff) told me".

"I never fight nobody as a friend, this is the first time ever", Nunes said. It was hard to me.

"I kind of think that if it was a male fight, it wouldn't be such a hot topic of discussion".

"We tried to make that fight happen because it's a big fight and the fans wanted it, but it couldn't happen at the time so I moved on", she said, per Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.

As for Pennington, she showed incredible toughness throughout the fight, although her corner didn't do her any favors by not stopping the contest when their athlete said she was done.
