Top Trump aide says protected immigrants need path to citizenship

Donald Trump and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen

When asked Thursday about the tense meeting, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told ABC News, "The president is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders".

Trump was furious with Nielsen, telling her he didn't think she was doing enough to secure the border.

Nielsen also released a statement in wake of the incident where she said she shared the president's frustrations but didn't exactly deny the fact she penned her resignation.

"All these are complicated matters and I will keep on to guide the Department to accomplish everything that we are able to in order to implement the President's security-focused schedule", she added, without saying anything regarding resignation programs.

Along with the some 700,000 Dreamers brought to the US illegally as children, who Trump stripped of protection in September, about one million people who were once legal residents in the country face potential deportation.

"The President is rightly frustrated that existing loopholes and the lack of Congressional action have prevented this administration from fully securing the border and protecting the American people", Nielsen said in the statement. Nielsen issued her own statement Thursday evening saying the president is justifiably frustrated but that she is staying on the job.

In response to Newsweek's request for comment, DHS press secretary Tyler Q. Houlton cited a Thursday afternoon tweet from his office, calling the Times story false.

1 person in the assembly said Trump railed in the whole Cabinet on what he said was deficiency of advancement keeping out illegal immigrants, " the occasions said.

Immigrants from Honduras, Haiti, El Salvador and other countries who were given protected status to live in the United States should have a path to citizenship, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly told National Public Radio on Friday.

Trump's anger about immigration has grown in recent weeks, according to several officials. The Post's account, headlined "Trump unloads on Homeland Security secretary in lengthy immigration tirade", adds the details that "Trump's tirade went on so long that many present began fidgeting in their seats and flashing grimaces", and that it lasted more than 30 minutes. More recently, however, those numbers have climbed back toward the level they were in the final years of the Obama administration-an intolerable equivalence for Trump. "We have the worst immigration laws in the history of mankind", the president said at a campaign-style rally in Elkhart, Indiana, on Thursday night.

One person familiar with Trump's blowup at the meeting said it was prompted by a discussion about why Mexico was not doing more to prevent illegal border crossings into the United States.

Just to be clear, Nielsen and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under her direction haven't shown any hesitation about separating families.
