Ex-PM Najib Razak banned from leaving Malaysia

Mahathir, who is the world's oldest elected leader, has said that the king has agreed to pardon jailed leading politician Anwar Ibrahim, paving the way for his return to politics and to potentially become premier.

Malaysia's outgoing Prime Minister Najib Razak walks to a news conference to concede the general election in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, May 10, 2018.

But Najib, who faces being investigated by the incoming government for alleged corruption, never appeared and the private jet, owned by Indonesian company Premiair, remained on the tarmac at Subang airport near Kuala Lumpur.

The election result is a political natural disaster for the Muslim-majority country, sweeping aside the 60-year rule of the National Front and its leader Najib Razak, whose reputation was tarnished by a monumental corruption scandal, a crackdown on dissent and the imposition of an unpopular sales tax that hurt many of his coalition's poor rural supporters.

Businessman Raja Singham, 49, who had tried to block the van from entering, said: "We have the right to know who is inside the vehicle, as a citizen I will fight for that".

The finance minister has been an ethnic Muslim Malay since 1974 and the appointment of Lim, a chartered accountant who led the wealthy northern state of Penang since 2008, reflects reforms pledged by Mahathir's alliance to heal racial divisions in the country blamed on decades-old preferential policies.

In a felicitation message today he hoped under his leadership, bilateral relations between Pakistan and Malaysia will be further broadened in diverse fields, particularly economic and trade.

While sodomy is illegal in Malaysia, it is rare for people to be convicted for it and so his treatment has generally been considered to be a political manoeuvre.

Earlier this week, Mr Najib's long-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition suffered a shock electoral defeat.

Citing resources, local media Malaymail also reported on May 11 that Najib and his wife are scheduled to depart from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang on May 12 on a plane bound for Jakarta.

Bridget Welsh, a Southeast Asia expert at John Cabot University in Rome, said it was hugely ironic that Mahathir, who damaged Malaysia's democratic institutions with his strong-arm rule, has returned as its political saviour. Najib and 1MDB deny any wrongdoing.

Malaysia will reach out to US authorities investigating the case, the lawmaker said. "It is about making amends about his mistakes and moving Malaysia forward".

"I got up late and lots of people got up late", he added.

Mahathir and Anwar have a complicated history, originally serving as prime minister and deputy respectively in the 1990s. The days where Mr Mahathir could dictate his terms are probably over.

Official results show Mr Mohamad secured 113 of the 222 seats available, while the BN took 79 seats.

Newly minted PM Mahathir has vowed to launch investigations into sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.
