Incumbent Manchin has financial edge in US Senate race

Don Blankenship addresses the media in 2015 after being found guilty of ignoring safety violations at a mine where 29 people died. He served a year in jail

Republicans wrapped up three crucial U.S. Senate primaries in West Virginia, Indiana and OH on Tuesday by nominating candidates who embraced President Donald Trump, while Democratic voters rejected insurgents from the left to stick with the party's mainstream. Both parties' overall turnout, unsurprisingly, was way down.

Trump made an 11th-hour appeal to West Virginia voters to block Blankenship from winning the party's nomination.

Trump called Blankenship Wednesday and while Thomas wouldn't go into detail about what was said it doesn't sound like the conversation changed Blankenship's mind about going after Morrisey. Conservative-backed state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey was nominated to challenge Manchin. In Ohio, Rep. Jim Renacci, who has been endorsed by Trump, also defeated businessman Mike Gibbons and will face Democratic Sen.

Trump's political advisers chose to hold the rally in the heart of Donnelly's political base.

It marked a good night for the GOP establishment, yet a awful night for sitting Republican members of the House. But with a chance to pick up a seat that has been Democratic since the Eisenhower administration (when former Klansman Robert Byrd won the seat), the GOP faced the nightmare scenario of blowing that chance, owing to picking an unelectable nominee in the primary. In the interview with Perino, McConnell suggested that thanks to his efforts to intervene in Republican primaries this year and in past elections, Republicans are in a better position to keep their majority in the Senate.

KELLY: OK. Too soon to say whether this might - what this might tell us going all the way forward into November and how 2018 will share up - will shape up particularly compared to past years. Another version of the argument: Rep. Conor Lamb (D-Pa.) might be able to win a party convention, but in primaries, voters will ruin their candidates with litmus tests.

GREENE: In just a few seconds, is President Trump and his record a good thing for Republicans to run on this fall?

The Cook Political Report has North Carolina's 9th District as Likely Republican.

Morrisey will now face Democratic Sen. In two primaries - Illinois's 12th district and Ohio's 7th district - the Democrats nominated candidates who pledged not to back Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House. Joe Manchin, whom Republicans are hoping to oust in November.

IN and West Virginia are particularly inviting targets for Republicans seeking to flip a Democratic seat, given Trump's margins of victory in those states and the party's dominance in state government.

Richard Ojeda won the Democratic nomination in West Virginia's third district Tuesday.

It's enough to make one think that the state, with its five electoral votes and solid Republican pedigree, might be on its way to the center of the political universe. A super PAC with ties to McConnell spent about $745,000 on TV and digital ads to oppose Blankenship, which made McConnell a primary target of Blankenship's wrath.

In a state where Trump claimed his largest margin of victory in 2016, Republican voters heeded warnings from the president and his allies in Washington against supporting Blankenship.Retiree Don Smith of Alum Creek said he didn't vote for Blankenship because he didn't believe he could win the Senate seat over Manchin.

According to Roll Call, Renacci was brought into the race after the chosen candidate, Josh Mandel, dropped out for family reasons. Republicans clinched a majority in both houses of the West Virginia Legislature for the first time in about eight decades after the 2014 elections, and have kept legislative control since. And while Renacci won his northeast OH base, he lost three of the nine counties - the ones along Lake Erie - that had switched from Obama to Trump.
