Imam dead in South Africa mosque attack, 2 others injured

The attack took place at the Imam Hussain Mosque in Ottawa‚ Verulam‚ north of Durban‚ shortly after 2.30pm.

Two other people were injured.

Reaction Unit SA spokesperson, Prem Balram, said the men were in a critical state.

Taliep said the council called on the police and other government structures to ensure the necessary criminal investigations are done so "the perpetrators and criminals can be brought to book and face the full might of the law". About 1.5 percent of the country's population is Muslim.

The KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Service (SAPS)'s Col Thembeka Mbhele confirmed the incident.

Local people at the scene managed to identify the suspects.

The chairperson of the portfolio committee on police, Francois Beukman also condemned the attacks.

South Africa has a history of relative religious tolerance.

Zev Krengel, the vice-president of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, said the organisation sent its thoughts and prayers to the victims of "this horrific attack" and the South African Muslim community. "We want our communities to live in harmony, practising their religions without fear".
