Do the 'secret chambers' of King Tut's tomb really exist?

Visual of what the GEM would look like upon completion

The announcement brings to a disappointing end an investigation that started three years ago, National Geographic reports, when Egyptologist and National Geographic grantee Nicholas Reeves suspected that the tomb of legendary 18th-dynasty Queen Nefertiti might be hidden behind King Tut's 3,300-year-old tomb. Back in November 1922, the tomb was uncovered by British archaeologists, perhaps for the first time since the boy-king ruled ancient Egypt around 1332 to 1323 BCE.

In 2015, the antiquities minister said that there was a "90 percent" chance that there was something behind the walls of Tutankhamun's tomb after initial reading of radar imaging suggesting that such a chamber exists. Nefertiti was King Tut's mother and her burial location has yet to be found.

Egypt's Antiquities Ministry announced the results of the research Sunday, ending years of debate about whether the rooms exist or not.

The possibility of previously undiscovered chambers in the boy king's tomb generated massive interest around the world.

The stone sarcophagus containing the mummy of King Tut is seen in his underground tomb.

Reeves even believed that he had detected hidden doors behind the funerary painting on the walls of the Pharaoh's tomb.

Met Gala 2018 Channel & Red Carpet Time
The first Monday in May is now considered, for many, to be a bigger night out than the Oscars. The actual exhibit opens May 10 inside The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters.

This marks the third radar survey of the tomb, the most comprehensive yet, and, the Ministry says, the conclusive word on the subject.

"Our work shows in a conclusive manner that there are no hidden chambers, no corridors adjacent to Tutankhamun's tomb", Porcelli said, "As you know there was a theory that argued the possible existence of these chambers but unfortunately our work is not supporting this theory". Researchers believe the queen was Tutankhamen's stepmother.

The somber news was presented at the fourth International Tutankhamun Conference in Cairo, which was attended by Egyptogists and archaeologists from all over the world.

However, this new research showed no such indication of any suspicious walls, nor any large empty voids lurking behind them.

However, Italian specialists from the University of Turin used new penetrating radar scans to reach their conclusion, saying they were confident of the results, the BBC reported.

King Tut's treasures are being transferred to a new museum that's being built on the outskirts of Cairo, near the Giza Pyramids. The museum now hosts more than 43,200 artifacts of which over 4,500 belong to King Tut.
