Benjamin Netanyahu accuses Iran of hiding nuclear weapons activity

Making friends U.S. President Donald Trump and Mr Netanyahu meet in the Oval Office of the White House during the latter's visit to the U.S. last month

"In a few days, Trump will decide what to do with the nuclear deal".

Netanyahu did not provide any evidence during his speech that work has continued since the deal was signed.

U.S President Donald Trump has criticized the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, which was negotiated under his predecessor, Barack Obama. "We also have a lot of respect for the Iranian people ... but we do not repeat the mistakes of the past". He charged that Iran had continued to carry out research and development in areas ostensibly prohibited by the nuclear deal, such as metallurgy and MPI technology. "100,000 secret files prove it did". In a speech aimed at the global community and delivered in English, the prime minister showed photographs of classified maps, charts, photographs, blueprints, videos and more documenting the Islamic Republic's ongoing effort to create nuclear weapons.

Speaking from the Kiryia military headquarters in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu, speaking mainly in English, said, "Iran's leaders repeatedly deny ever pursuing nuclear weapons", said Netanyahu.

Netanyahu on Monday evening unveiled copies of half a ton of material that make up part of what he identified as Iran's secret nuclear files. "He's not going to take anything for granted here", he says, referring to Netanyahu by his widely used nickname. And the files also show that Iran's intent was to revive the nuclear weapons program at a later date, he said.

After twice playing video of Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif affirming that "we never wanted to produce a bomb", Netanyahu retorted: "Yes you did".

If Prime Minister Netanyahu possesses evidence to the contrary, proving that Iran is violating the agreement, it is incumbent upon him to share this information with the IAEA.

The offer seemed calculated to appease the US president's discontent with the current agreement, the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Programme of Action (JCPOA) by proposing a broader initiative to tackle other elements of Iran's challenge in the region, particularly its ballistic missile programme, and its military role in Syria.

After his meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday, Netanyahu said that "the attempt of Iran to acquire nuclear weapons" remains "the greatest threat" to Israel, the US, and the whole world.

In all, Netanyahu said Israel has obtained "exact copies" of some 55,000 files from the purported Iranian archive.

His implication: If Iran is released from the accord starting in 2025, as the agreement requires, then expect a nuclear Tehran shortly thereafter. It is altogether possible that President Trump will nix the deal - with just a little push from Netanyahu.

Trump gave Britain, France and Germany a May 12 deadline to fix what he views as the deal's flaws - its failure to address Iran's ballistic missile program, the terms by which inspectors visit suspect Iranian sites, and "sunset" clauses under which some of its terms expire - or he will re-impose U.S. sanctions.
