Police IG snubs Senate; summoned again over Melaye

IGP Ibrahim Idris

Saraki said, "Just to re-emphasise the point: tomorrow morning, by 11am, Senator Abu Ibrahim (who is Chairman, Committee on Police Affairs), by the resolution on the motion, the IG should be here to address us in plenary".

Embattled Kogi lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, has been lambasted by Nigerians on social media, for still having access to his mobile phone and internet while allegedly under police watch at the hospital where he is now admitted.

The IGP is to appear before the Senate today by 11.am during plenary.

"This afternoon, the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly matters told me that the IGP has travelled to Bauchi with President Buhari", Mr Na'Allah informed the chamber.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Thursday failed to honour the invitation of the Senate to explain the controversial arrest of a senator, Dino Melaye and the gruesome killings by suspected herdsmen across the country.

The announcement was greeted with anger from senators who felt Mr Idris' failure to appear was a disrespect to the institution. He has not eaten for the past 24 hours.

He was later transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja for further treatment.
