Irish border solution is 'fantasy', says former ambassador to EU

UK's Irish border plans subject to 'systematic and forensic annihilation' by EU, report says

European Union chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said today that a quarter of Brexit issues, including the Irish border, are yet to be resolved.

The EU's chief negotiator has said there is still a "risk of failure" in the Brexit negotiations as Brussels again rejected the UK's proposals to avoid a hard border in Ireland.

Theresa May's hopes of leaving the customs union may be dashed if the United Kingdom wishes to avoid a hard border with Ireland.

Mrs May has said remaining part of a customs union would "betray the vote of the British people" and "not be compatible with a meaningful independent trade policy".

With a debate and vote on the customs union in the House of Commons next week expected to reveal the level of support for it among MPs, some believe the prime minister could yet be forced into conceding on her red line on the issue.

The report was published as former United Kingdom ambassador to the EU Sir Ivan Rogers said the British government's hopes for a technological solution to the border issue were regarded as "a fantasy island unicorn model" in Europe.

A British government spokesperson said Britain is continuing an "intensive work programme to engage" all the scenarios set out in a joint report in December, which was agreed by Mrs May and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Amazon recruits Best Buy to sell Fire TV Edition smart TVs
The retailers announced today (April 18) that they're joining forces to sell televisions across the US and Canada. Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly said the new Fire TVs will provide customers with a "incredible user experience".

The agreement included three options for the Irish border, with the British backing a close economic relationship which would make customs checks unnecessary or technological solutions to render them near-frictionless.

The latest revelations to emerge from the European Union negotiations could risk creating parliamentary instability for British Prime Minister Theresa May in the House of Commons.

He added: "There is clear momentum and political support for the United Kingdom to remain in the customs union".

A customs partnership would see Britain collecting tariffs on behalf of the European Union for goods entering the country en route to Europe and applying its own tariffs to imported goods destined for the British market. "That commitment was set out in December's Joint Report which also includes our guarantee of avoiding a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland", a spokesman said.

A British government spokesman added: "We have been clear that we will protect Northern Ireland's place in the United Kingdom internal market".

The second proposal, and reportedly preferred choice for the United Kingdom negotiators, was described as a "highly streamlined customs arrangement" by May.

Lord Macpherson, the former top official at the Treasury, said the EU's position was "predictable" because of the backstop solution in the Withdrawal Agreement. "We're confident we can continue".
