Giuliani adds muscle, star power to Trump's legal team

New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani

There's something ironic about that, because Trump's refusal to take the advice not to is reportedly the main reason for the resignation of John Dowd, who led the president's personal legal team in the Russian Federation investigation until last month.

Trump's legal counsel, Jay Sekulow, announced the move in a statement.

Sekulow praised Giuliani for being a great friend to the president "for a long time".

"Jane and Marty are highly respected former federal prosecutors with decades of experience".

Mayor Giuliani once served as US Attorney for the Southern District of NY, the office that is now overseeing an investigation into President Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen.

The former NY mayor told The Washington Post on Thursday that he hopes to "negotiate an end" to the investigation into Russian interference in the election "for the good of the country".

"It's too early for me to say that", Giuliani said of whether a Mueller interview is unlikely to happen.

She even won support from a series of Labour MPs who backed her decision to join the United States and France in mounting strikes. The three countries had planned a coordinated strike on Syria in response to the chemical attack and was executed recently.

Giuliani, who also once served as the USA attorney in Manhattan, did not return requests for comment. Giuliani, however, made it clear his role on the team will be "limited".

Lead lawyer John Dowd resigned in late March after growing exasperated over the President refusing to heed his advice. It's been reported that Trump is not now a target of the investigation, but Mueller has indicted several people - including Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort - as part of it. "I see no indication" that Trump "did anything wrong either before he became president or after he became president".

Special counsel Robert Mueller (L) arrives at the U.S. Capitol for closed meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee June 21, 2017 in Washington, DC.

When it comes to splash hires for the president's legal team, it's hard to beat "America's F-ing Mayor".

Still, Giuliani knows Mueller from prior work at the Justice Department as well as Mueller's tenure as Federal Bureau of Investigation director while Giuliani was New York's mayor.

"What you've got here are two very serious white-collar lawyers who know how to defend their clients", CNN legal analyst Michael Zeldin said of the Raskins. When the two men spoke at Mar-a-Lago recently, Giuliani told the President he wanted the job, one of the sources said. He also intensified his public criticism of the Mueller investigation, calling it "an attack on our country".

"I don't know yet what's outstanding". He was a vigorous defender of Trump during the 2016 campaign. He also said that there have been no instances of collusion.
