Schumer to introduce marijuana decriminalization legislation

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer speaks during a news conference following weekly policy luncheons on Capitol Hill

Schumer (D-N.Y.) plans to introduce a bill to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wants to end federal pot prohibition.

The announcement, which came on 4/20 (slang for marijuana use), was the first time the Democratic leader has publicly advocated for removing weed from the list of Schedule 1 substances under the Controlled Substances Act, a category that includes drugs such as heroin that are considered to have no medicinal value, great potential danger and a severe risk of abuse.

'If smoking marijuana doesn't hurt anybody else, why shouldn't we allow people to do it and not make it criminal?' Schumer asks in the broadcast segment, airing Friday night.

"Under existing law, the federal government considers marijuana as unsafe as heroin and treats it less favorably than cocaine".

"It's time to allow states, once and for all, to have the power to decide what works best for them".

The complete interview will be televised Friday night at 7:30 on HBO's "Vice News Tonight".

Sanders said, "The president is a firm believer" in states' rights.

Joel Embiid Listed As Doubtful For 76ers' Game 3
It may not be long before head coach Brett Brown can reinsert Embiid back into the lineup, perhaps as early as Monday or Thursday. Dragic eventually capped a 6-0 run with a baseline jumper for a 104-96 lead with 2:25 left, and the 76ers never challenged again.

64 percent of Americans support some form of marijuana legalization.

Schumer's bill to legalize pot is unlikely to become law anytime soon.

'[U] nder existing law, ' Schumer tweeted, 'the federal government considers marijuana as unsafe as heroin and treats it less favorably than cocaine.

Instead, his bill would let states decide how to treat marijuana possession.

"I've seen too many people's lives ruined by the criminalization", he said".

THREAD: It's official. Today, I am formally announcing my plan to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. Colorado voted to legalize the drug for recreational use in 2012, and there is essentially no lingering political dispute anymore about its merits from either party there. Besides claiming that "reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men" he also asserted that "most" marijuana smokers in the USA were "Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos", and entertainers.

The bill also seeks to allocate funds for women and minority-owned marijuana businesses and public health research regarding the effects of THC, the main active chemical in marijuana. Schumer's cannabis conversion-which comes after that of former House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican who not long ago was describing himself as "unalterably opposed" to legalization-is embarrassingly tardy. Nine of those states have taken it a step further, making it legal for recreational purposes. The DEA now regard marijuana as being a substance with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse, something that has been proven time and time again to be false.
