US Olympian McKayla Maroney reveals horrific details of being sexually assaulted

Larry Nassar is facing an additional 40-to-125 ears in prison on top of his 60-year sentence for child pornography charges

Appearing Wednesday on the Today show, former Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney said that convicted child molester Larry Nassar sexually abused her on "hundreds" of occasions.

Maroney also said Nassar told her that his abusive treatment was part of her "sacrifice" to get to the Olympics, and to keep it secret as others wouldn't understand. "He didn't say it in a way that was mean or anything like that.

And there's just other things about the culture that are also messed up that he used against us", McKayla Maroney said of Larry Nassar in a forthcoming "Dateline" interview, airing Sunday.

He was sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography charges in 2017 and sentenced to at least 80 additional years by two additional MI judges for sexual assault earlier this year.

The athletes also had harsh words for Michigan State University officials, who they said failed to do their due diligence in protecting Nassar's patients both at the school and throughout the country.

"Dr. Nassar was not a doctor, he in fact is, was, and forever shall be, a child molester, and a monster of a human being", Maroney wrote.

USA Gymnastics responded to Maroney's comments in a statement to NBC News and praised her courage for speaking out.

Wieber's Los Angeles Superior Court complaint makes her one of more than 260 people suing the MSU, USAG and others, accusing them of failing to prevent Nassar's abuse of women and girls.

USA Gymnastics cut ties with the training camp in wake of Nassar's ongoing and unchecked sexual abuse there.

She continued: "It is time to hold the leadership of Michigan State University USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee accountable for allowing and in some cases enabling his crimes".

During the years of abuse, she said her parents "didn't know at all", since she trusted Nassar and USA Gymnastics, and believed they were looking out for her best interests and helping her fulfill her dream of competing at the Olympics.

How many times before she finally quit competitive gymnastics? "All they cared about was money, medals, and it didn't seem like there was anything else", Maroney said.

The 22-year-old gymnast originally spoke on the topic last October, when she went public on her Twitter account.

Nassar is now serving up to 175 years in prison, but questions continue to swirl about whether powerful institutions could have done more to stop him.
