Saudi Arabia to open first cinema in 35 years

Emmanuel Macron

The kingdom banned cinemas in the early 1980s under pressure from Islamists as Saudi society embraced a severe form of Islam. "The UAE is dissatisfied with Saudi policies", he said.

It is still unknown if men and women will be together in the same screening hall, as in the Saudi kingdom there are rigorous behavior principles that demand the separation of sexes in public spaces.

A further three screens are expected to open at the AMC cinema in the coming months and will show a range of Hollywood films.

"It will be the first in a series of test screenings, attended by industry specialists, that will be held... to support final preparations for the opening of the cinema to the wider public", the information ministry's Center for International Communication said.

Over the past few years, Saudi Arabia has gradually been loosening restrictions on movie screenings, with local film festivals and screenings in makeshift theatres. The goal over the coming years is to reduce Saudi's economic reliance on oil.

The Saudi government projects that the opening of movie theatres will contribute more than 90 billion riyals (£17 billion) to the economy and create more than 30,000 jobs by 2030.

Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Entertainment, said: "At AMC we have around 1,000 theatres and 11,000 screens across the globe - but none of them have caught the world's imagination like this one". "Younger people and older people will be flooding to the place to see the show", he added.

Bon-Ton sale likely beginning of the end for Peru Bergner's
The stores included: Sioux City, West Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Des Moines, Mason City and Dubuque. Until local store representatives hear from the company, Evans said his crew is following along with the news.

The cinema will open to the public on Friday.

Mr. Dawood added: "The entertainment industry in Saudi Arabia holds incredible promise and we are firmly committed to seeing the exciting world of worldwide, regional and Saudi filmmaking featured in cinemas in every major city in the Kingdom, as set out in Vision 2030". It's hoping to operate half of all Saudi theaters in the long run in partnership the Saudi state-owned Development and Investment Entertainment Company.

Riyadh and Shia rival Tehran also back opposing sides in other hotspots across the mainly Sunni Middle East, including Lebanon, Iraq and Saudi Arabia's southern neighbour, Yemen.

According to the latest plans, Saudi Arabia will open about 350 cinemas and 2,500 screens by 2030, generating approximately $1billion in box office spend each year and transforming the Kingdom into the 11th largest market in the world.

For the most part, though, Saudis who wanted to watch a film in a cinema would have to drive to nearby Bahrain or the United Arab Emirates.

Unofficial screenings of movies like "The Emoji Movie" and "Captain Underpants" were hosted in the country to mark the ban's removal earlier this year.
