Missiles shot down over Syria airbases

Satellite imagery of Shayrat airbase following last year's US air strike

After midnight, Syrian state media outlets and the War Media, the media wing of the Syrian army and its allies, reported that Syrian air defenses responded to a missile strike believed to be carried out by Israel.

"Last night, a false alarm that Syrian air space had been penetrated triggered the blowing of air defence sirens and the firing of several missiles", a military source told state news agency SANA."There was no external attack on Syria", the source added. Approximately nine missiles reportedly targeted the base; their source isn't yet clear.

Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahond said there was "no USA military activity in that area at this time", according to The Jerusalem Post. This area has also been targeted by the Israeli air force in the past.

The US Defence Department has said there was no US missile activity in the area at the time and an Israeli military spokesman said he was "not aware of such an incident".

State TV had shown pictures of a missile it said was shot in the air above the air base.

Facebook Accused of Violating Privacy Via Facial Recognition Technology
This template is then used to suggest tags for other images if it recognises the faces in them. The social network turned off facial recognition in Europe in 2012, the website says.

Earlier in April, four Iranian military personnel were killed in an airstrike on the Syrian T4 air base in Homs.

Shayrat airbase was targeted past year in a USA cruise missile attack in response to a chemical attack that killed at least 70 people, including children on the rebel held town of Khan Sheikhoun.

The reports came just a few days after the US, Britain and France conducted airstrikes targeting chemical weapons facilities in Syria, in retaliation for a poisonous gas attack in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta that left at least 40 dead.

Israeli interventions: Tel Aviv has carried out multiple airstrikes on Syrian government targets during the conflict.

Israel's main concern in Syria is the growing influence of Iran, which it says supplies weapons to Hezbollah from inside the country.
