Boy, 8, brings knife to school, attacks 3 students

HAPPY RECIPIENTS. Students of Barrio Luz National High School receive the projects donated by Paref Springdale students last month

The attack happened before school yesterday morning and three students were injured.

Watkins said the incident lasted approximately five minutes before the student was stopped by "adult intervention".

Three Pleasantview Elementary School students - ages 8, 9 and 13 - were cut in the incident, according to Sauk Rapids Police Chief Perry Beise. Chief Beise says after stabbing his fellow students the suspect went to the school office and laid the knife down. Officials say the victims suffered minor injuries. He was questioned and then released to the custody of his parents. The weapon was a kitchen knife the boy brought to school. Sauk Rapids police declared that they are not going to press charges, the child needing counseling and guidance rather than jail.

Staff and students at the school will be able to speak with mental health counselors if needed, according to KARE. School officials immediately called police and an ambulance.

Police responded in large numbers to an alert at an upper secondary school (gymnasium) on Monday after a former student reportedly threatened to carry out a shooting.

Interim Superintendent Bruce Watkins said the "second-grade student entered the building, put his backpack away and pulled out a knife and struck three students".

He was expelled on Monday and consequently made the alleged threat against the Next Gymnasium upper secondary school, where the incident took place.

The injured students are in first, fourth and seventh grades. Mental health professionals are available on site at Pleasantview Elementary.
