Hurricane names Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate retired

Is your name on the new hurricane list?

Four of last season's hurricanes were deemed so destructive and deadly that the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization has chose to retire their names.

The World Meteorological Organization on Thursday removed the names Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate from the list of future hurricane names due to the "extensive damage" those storms caused in the United States and Caribbean past year.

Although this past year was destructive, the 2005 Hurricane Season retired the most names - Dennis, Katrina, Rita, Stan and Wilma.

Experience shows that the use of short, distinctive given names in written as well as spoken communications is quicker and less subject to error than the older more cumbersome latitude-longitude identification methods.

To replace the four names, Harold, Idalia, Margot and Nigel will be included in the 2023 list of storm names.

Unless a name is retired, the exact same list of names is used again six years later.

Damages from the 2017 hurricane season exceeded $250 billion in the United States alone while several hundred people died throughout the world from hurricanes in 2017, according to WMO.

Hurricane Harvey became a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale before making landfall along the middle Texas coast on August 25. The meeting is chaired by Kenneth Graham, the new director of NOAA's National Hurricane Center.

The World Meteorological Association is retiring those names. Harvey is the second-costliest hurricane in US history behind only Katrina in 2005. Irma came ashore in southwest Florida as a Category 4 hurricane.

"The extremely active 2017 Atlantic hurricane season was one of the most destructive on record", the WMO reported. It caused 44 direct deaths as a result of wind, rain and heavy surf.

Irma - a Category 5 storm, the strongest designation, wrecked havoc on Caribbean islands; Barbuda was nearly completely destroyed. The death toll from Maria in Puerto Rico is 65, but because the island still lacks power, the number of indirect deaths is hard to calculate. Nate's rainfall inundated Central America and killed 45.
