Sens. Pat Roberts, Ben Sasse say Trump looking to re-enter TPP

Trump looking into rejoining TPP trade deal

Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, the chairman of the Senate agriculture, nutrition and forestry committee, said he was "very impressed" that Trump had assigned Kudlow and Lighthizer "the task to see if we couldn't take another look at TPP".

Farm-state lawmakers said Thursday after a White House meeting with Trump that he had given that assignment to his trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, and his new chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow. Trump spent the 2016 presidential campaign ripping into the multi-national pact, saying he could get a better deal for USA businesses by negotiating one-on-one with countries in the Pacific Rim. The agreement is meant to establish freer trade in the Asia-Pacific region and put pressure on China to open its markets to compete with and perhaps eventually join the bloc.

Trump argued throughout the 2016 presidential campaign that TPP was harmful to the American workforce, robbing the manufacturing sector of jobs for Americans. "Lots of good things from this meeting", Sasse said. Sasse and other congressional advocates for agricultural trade have been pushing ever since to re-enter the.

Following a meeting between the president, his advisers and members of Congress today, Sasse told reporters that Trump had advanced in his thinking on TPP, which he withdrew from shortly after taking office previous year.

PNB scam: Enforcement Directorate finds Rs 5000 crore money trail, says report
China on Monday indicated it won't interfere in Hong Kong's decision on India's request to arrest businessman Nirav Modi. The Enforcement Directorate is set to file a chargesheet against Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi in the PNB fraud case.

Trump, at the time, called the administration's withdrawal from the TPP a "great thing for the American worker".

"The Trans-Pacific Partnership is another disaster, done and pushed by special interests who want to rape our country", Trump said in June 2016.

The White House is considering re-entering the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a trade pact that President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of a year ago. Only two months ago he said the TPP was "bad" for the United States, reiterating his support for bilateral deals instead of multilateral deals.

Besides Canada and Mexico, the members of the pact are Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

But in recent months - even as he has erected tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and against China - the President has also begun to signal a willingness to reassess his stance on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
