Chinese baby Sweetie born four years after death of parents

It’s not clear when the child died or when the suitcase was left near the train tracks

A baby has been born in China to a surrogate mother four years after his parents died in a auto crash, BBC News reported. The case, first reported by the Beijing News, presented countless hurdles: The most daunting, perhaps, was that there was no legal precedent in China for parents to inherit the embryos of their deceased children. But five days before they were supposed to have a fertilized embryo transplanted into Liu, both of them passed away in a auto accident in March 2013, in the province of Jiangsu in China. The baby was born to a surrogate from Laos on December 9, after years of battles between the court and his grandparents over the frozen embryos.

Laos has become the latest impoverished nation in Asia to witness a flourishing but legally opaque commercial surrogacy industry after countries like Thailand, Cambodia and Nepal outlawed the practice in recent years. Other babies have their fathers and mothers, but he doesn't.

Following the incident, the couple's parents embarked on a lengthy legal battle to obtain the fertilized eggs, which were being kept at a hospital in Nanjing. No airline would carry the embryos, which were encased in a thermos containing 196°C (385°F) liquid nitrogen, so the trip was taken by vehicle. The next problem for the little one was the issue of his citizenship, so the surrogate mother traveled with a tourist visa to China to give birth to him.

Hu Xingxian, the maternal grandmother, said: "We named her Sweetie, because we hoped her arrival would bring sweetness to us after the bitterness".

(NYSE:KR) Ratings Summary on April 10, 2018
Following the transaction, the chief operating officer now owns 290,353 shares of the company's stock, valued at $8,031,163.98. Finally, UBS Asset Management Americas Inc. increased its position in shares of Kroger by 12.7% during the 4th quarter.

Although he has no parents, his four grandparents have reportedly proven relations through DNA.

They've made a decision to tell Tiantian his parents are overseas until he is old enough to understand how he was born.

The four grandparents-in-waiting eventually chose to enlist the services of a surrogacy agency in Laos, where it is legal.

"We will definitely tell him in the future - how can we not?"
