Apple's making curved iPhone screens that support air gestures

Apple reportedly plans iPhones with curved screens and non-touch gesture controls

Apple is reportedly working on a couple of new features for future iPhones in order to differentiate its products from the growing competition.

Apple is staying ahead of the curve by introducing features not found in competitors' models. Now it remains to be seen how the touchless gesture feature works out for Apple.

Apple is developing touchless iPhones with curved displays.

Bloomberg said that these are all in very early stages of research and might take two or three more years before consumers can start seeing these innovations in their iPhones; this is if Apple chooses to move forward with it.

Apple's 3D Touch works by detecting the different amounts of pressure applied by the user.

A new report claims that future iPhones might be equipped with technology that allows you to use them without having to touch their screen with your finger. Unlike the display on the Samsung Galaxy S9, this new iPhone's display will curve from inwards from top to bottom (kind of like a banana).

Samsung now uses smartphone screens that curve, but its curved screens slope down at the edges, rather than from top to bottom. For those unaware, the OLED screen of the iPhone X also bends inward from the bottom but is not visible to the human eye. OLED screens can be curved or folded. The report said that the iPhone display Apple is now developing detects finger gestures even without physically touching the screen.

Air Gestures, on the other hand, rely on a motion sensor in the phone's bezel.

Google is also working on technology using gestures through a program called Project Soli. Apple seems to be stressing a lot on screen development recently. What makes Apple's approach to the technology different is the fact that the tech giant would rely on sensitivity built into the display, rather than an external camera.

According to a Thursday report, Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology has approved PlayNitride's application to set up a US$17 million production facility at Hsinchu Science Park.
