Egypt's poll body threatens to fine non-voters

Turnout low as Egyptians wrap up presidential vote

Early results from Egypt's election showed President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi cruising toward his expected landslide victory and a second term, but with a lower turnout than the vote that brought him to power four years ago.

El-Sisi's opposing candidate, Mousa Mostafa Mousa, a little-known contender who entered the presidential race hours just before the nomination deadline, received 721,000 votes, according to al-Ahram.

Almost 60 million Egyptians are eligible to vote at some 13,700 polling centers.

The 40 percent turnout was down from 47 percent during the 2014 presidential election, causing some disappointment among government supporters.

The judge said the percentage registered at this station could not be an indication as many stations across the country witnessed a high turnout that exceeded 50 percent.

Most Egyptians who voted for Sisi expressed their belief in him as a saviour from Islamist radicalism of the now blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood group and trust in his leadership of the country for eradication of terrorism and for further security, stability and development.

It is all a question of authorities providing at least a relatively high voter turnout for the elections, which actually became a vote of confidence in the reelected Egyptian leader.

Linda Brown, girl at centre of school desegregation case, dies at 76
The court directed schools to desegregate "with all deliberate speed", but it failed to establish a firm timetable for doing so. At the same time , schools with 90 percent white student populations fell from 39 percent to 18 percent.

Ballot-counting kicked off Wednesday evening on the third and final day of the poll - Egypt's third presidential election since its 2011 popular uprising.

"The scenes of the Egyptians before the polling stations will remain sources of honor and pride for me, and a shining proof of the greatness of our nation", Sisi posted on his Facebook page. The voter turnout data during the three-day voting are not yet given.

Sisi overthrew Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in 2013 following mass protests against his rule.

Some voters said they had received payments and other inducements to cast their ballots. Egypt's electoral spokesman said Wednesday he was personally opposed to the imposition of fines, although theoretically, the law could be applied.

Some voters interviewed by Reuters over the first two days of polling said they had been offered money, boxes of food, and services to cast their ballots.

Another group of women, who also declined to be named, said they had been promised bags of food containing rice and vegetable oil in exchange for votes.
