The first Winter Storm Warning of Spring, 2018

What spring? Winter storm headed to south-central Minnesota Friday, Saturday

The National Weather Service had winter storm warnings in effect Friday through Saturday evening in northwestern and central IL. Snow had trouble sticking to the ground during the day, but accumulations started to rise after nightfall.

Snow may mix with freezing rain along the Interstate 74 corridor, while southwestern IN should see mainly rain and possibly thunderstorms. Snowfall rates will likely be heavy enough to accumulate on the roads.

Forecasters said any shift in the storm's track will change snowfall amounts and the type of precipitation some areas receive.

The City of Minot reminds residents that the heavy, wet snow predicted to fall in the Minot area over the next few days could prevent the effective use of snow gates on snow removal equipment. "Some areas from Allison, to Waterloo, Independence, and down toward Cedar Rapids and Tipton could see isolated 8-12" amounts.

The National Weather Service has reports of over 19 inches in Bay Shore and Patchogue.

Predictions also show that "snow mixed with rain is expected on Saturday with some light snow accumulations possible".

Drivers should plan for wet and sloppy travel conditions between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, particularly in northern Kentucky, on Interstate 71 and Interstate 75 south to Louisville and Lexington. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice will make travel very hazardous or impossible. Power outages are possible.
