Indians Held By ISIS Have Been Killed, Informs Sushma Swaraj

39 Indians killed in Iraq: 'It was my duty to inform Parliament before families,' says Sushma Swaraj

39 Indians kidnapped, killed by ISIS in Iraq, Reported by two Bangladeshi workers: Well, now shocking news is coming out from the mouth of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj as she told that "Thirty-nine Indians kidnapped by the Islamic State in Iraq's Mosul in 2014 are dead".

On the delay in confirmation of the deaths of 39 Indians, Sushma Swaraj said that the government was waiting for solid evidence about the deaths and informed how bodies were identified. Their mortal remains were exhumed and sent to Iraq's capital Baghdad for DNA sample verification.

"Our government doesn't believe in "missing means killed" theory", said Swaraj while declaring that she met the foreign ministers of respective countries personally to garner evidence. "I refused to close the files (of the 39 Indians) till we had concrete proof in hand (about their death)", she said at a press conference.

However, while addressing the media, Swaraj said that the government did not keep anyone in the dark on the issue of 39 Indians killed in Iraq's Mosul.

Sushma told Parliament that MoS EAM, General VK Singh, will go to Iraq to bring back mortal remains.

The abducted workers, most from northern India, had been employed by a construction company operating near Mosul when militants captured wide swaths of northern Iraq in the summer of 2014.

The foundation had informed the Indian mission in Baghdad of the DNA matches on Monday, Swaraj said. "We heard her statement that she made in the Parliament".

The department had earlier collected DNA samples from the kin of the hostages, which was then matched with the remains of bodies found in one of the mass graves.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, in a series of tweets, said that using Parliament as an excuse for the families of 39 dead Indians having to learn of their heartbreaking loss from TV channels is unpardonable.

Sushma also said that the stranded Indians were kidnapped and a lot of them were from Punjab.

"Swaraj had said when the Iraqi prime minister comes to India, the government will confirm it from him, but didn't do anything", he added.

Asked whether the government would consider compensation to the families of the victims, Swaraj said she would talk to the concerned state governments.
