An affordable house, 3D-printed in less than 24 hours

The company says it can now build their single-story home for $10,000 using an industrial-sized Vulcan printer but is working to drop that cost to $4,000. ICON and New Story worked in close partnership with several other organizations to develop the Vulcan printer including Pump Studios, Yaskawa Electric, Alchemy Builders, TreeHouse, Andrew Logan Architecture, Linestar Automation and The University of Texas. ICON wants to address the housing deficiency with the help of the low-priced 3D printing technique.

The partners are hoping to build a community of 100 3D-printed homes in El Salvador next year.

A report from the World Resources Institute estimated that 1.2 billion people now live in cities without affordable or secure housing.

The model house that was unveiled had a curved porch, bathroom, bedroom, and living room.

With 3D printing emerging throughout the construction industry, the technology is becoming a groundbreaking production tool for affordable and sustainable housing.

"(ICON) believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci said. The printers are capable of using any number of materials-including food, cement, and others-and creating a 3D structure.

New Story is a non-profit working to create a world where no human lives in survival mode by providing one of life's most basic needs - shelter.

3D printed houses, according to him, is one of the more promising technologies for creating habitats in the future. "Linear methods will never reach the billion+ people who need safe homes", said Brett Hagler, CEO of New Story. The roof is the only part that is not 3D-printed.

'For this venture to succeed, they have to be the best houses. "It's much cheaper than the typical American home", ICON co-founder Jason Ballard told The Verge. That's not all, the company is also already looking past El Salvador and the United States into space.

The portable printer is created to function with near zero-waste and to work under unpredictable constraints (limited water, power, and labor infrastructure) to tackle housing shortages in underserved communities throughout the world. Ballard has noted that creating habitats in space is a huge challenge, but one-day communities will live off-Earth.
