Former Wildcats to compete at IAAF World Indoor Championships

Athletics Britain's Rutherford withdraws from world indoor championships

Thursday's opening session of the March 1-4 championships will end with the women's 3,000 metres final with defending champion Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia and Britain's Laura Muir in action.

American Paul Chelimo, a world 5,000m silver medallist, faces a hugely strong young Ethiopian contingent in the men's 3000m in 18-year-old Selemon Barega, victor of the world under-20 5,000m title in 2016 and the world under-18 3,000m title last year, Hagos Gebrhiwet, the 23-year-old Olympic 5,000m bronze medallist, and defending champion Yomif Kejelcha, who earned a wild card for the championships by winning the IAAF World Indoor Tour. Her season best in the 60m sprint heading into the championships is 7.35 secs. Britain's CJ Ujah was expected to challenge for a medal but blew it with a false start in his semi-final. "F**king indoors", was about all he could manage.

Her success came minutes after Eilidh Doyle has clinched a bronze over 400m.

Hassan was second in 8:45.68, and Muir third in 8:45.78 in Arena Birmingham.

By all accounts, the night belonged to Muir.

Muir, who finished in four minutes 06.23 seconds, overtook Sifan Hassan on the final lap after the Holland runner finished ahead of her in the 3,000m.

Dibaba covered the final 1,500 meters in 4:04.05.

She said: 'I thought if I could scrape a medal that would be great but to get a silver medal is better still. "I was so focused on the race and the people in front of me".

China says its 'moderate' defence spending rises are no threat
He added that the country's stance is defensive in nature and will not pose any threat to others. However, proportionally, China's defence spending is less than other major countries, he said.

"I used my strengths and made the moves in the right places". I reacted when I had to. "I just need to wipe the memory of today's race and go into it with a clean slate and a fresh attitude". "This time yesterday I was in a taxi halfway down the M6".

"The world stage is completely different, running against the Africans, but I have shown I can definitely mix it with them and come up with the goods".

"We are delighted to be hosting the European Indoor Athletics Championships 2019", said Billy Garrett, director of sport and events at Glasgow Life and co-chair of the Glasgow 2019 steering committee.

That is not to take anything from Doyle, however.

They were her first major global titles and the Scot will be looking to do it again on the world indoor stage in Birmingham.

In a fast race that saw the victor, Courtney Okolo of the United States, record a lifetime best of 50.55secs, Doyle struck on the final lap to move into third before surviving a late charge from Poland's Justyna Swiety-Ersetic at the line. "It's not my preferred event so to do this is really incredible". It was a fine call, both on a personal level, and for a young team making significant inroads.

Ther was also a bit of controversy with Elliot Giles in the 800m, who for an hour was awarded the bronze medal after American Drew Windle was disqualified. "I've not seen the race back".

Barshim added: "I'm happy with the medal but not quite the result". "I think it has made my preparation slightly more straightforward". I can go into that with so much confidence.
