Roger Bannister, runner who broke the 4-minute mile, dies aged 88

UK athlete Roger Bannister has died aged 88: British media

Sir Roger Bannister, famed for being the first runner to break the four-minute-mile barrier, died Saturday in Oxford, England.

Bannister, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2011, died at his home in Oxford, his family said in a brief announcement on Sunday, reports Xinhua news agency. They say his death was peaceful and we was with his family at the time.

Bannister, who was a medical student at the time, clocked a time of 3 minutes 59.4 second at a sports ground in Oxford on May 6, 1954, to beat a record by Swedish runner Gundar Haegg of 4:01.4 that had stood for nine years. I felt at that moment that it was my chance to do one thing supremely well.

Later in 1954, Bannister won the 1,500 meters at the European Championships in Bern, Switzerland, in a games record of 3:43.8.

Seb Coe, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, said Bannister's death marked "a day of intense sadness both for our nation and for all of us in athletics".

El Guerrouj, now 43, wowed the world on 7 July in Rome, and after his race he suggested he could break his own record in future by running the mile in 3:41 or 3:42.

He also became the first chairman of the body now known as Sport England (formerly the Sports Council) and was knighted for his services in 1975. "Life has its physical challenges, but I take every day as it comes", he said.

Brain surgeons perform procedure on wrong patient
The four include the neurosurgeon, ward nurse, theater receiving nurse and anesthetist, she said. One of them needed nursing and medication, but no surgery, to heal a trauma on the brain.

Bannister was chosen as Sports Illustrated's first Sportsman of the Year in 1954. Supposedly, the smartest and most plugged-in observers had concluded that human beings simply were not capable of running a mile in less than four minutes, and so Bannister's having done it was not only a historic achievement, but a scientific one too.

In 1954, Bannister retired from racing and studied neurology.

I'm so sorry to hear the sad news about Roger Bannister. He leaves behind his wife Moyra Jacobsson, their two sons, two daughters, and 14 grandchildren.

Coe ran a mile in a world record 3 minutes, 47.33 seconds in 1981 between winning gold medals in the 1,500 meters at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. "There is not a single athlete of my generation who was not inspired by Roger and his achievements on and off the track".

Bannister returned to Oxford in 1985 to become Master of Pembroke College, a position he held until 1993.

Bannister outlived his 4-minute mile pacemakers: Brasher, who founded the London Marathon, died in 2003 at the age of 74.
