Gov. Scott discusses 'massive changes' to school safety

Gov. Scott in Tampa highlighting plan to keep FL students safe

The House and Senate Appropriations Committees voted to approve bills that create a new program to arm teachers in classrooms, though details were different in the pieces of legislation.

Gov. Scott spent the past week pitching his plan across the state.

He's expected to discuss a $500 million investment in school safety and mental health aimed at keeping Florida students safe after a deadly massacre killed 17 people on February 14.

"We do have the money".

"We need to pass reforms to make it virtually impossible for anyone who has a mental illness or a danger to themselves, ever to use a gun", Scott said at the press conference.

Scott wants one school resource officer for every 1,000 students and mandatory active shooter drills.

The House and Senate costly initiative that would include more funding for mental health services in school and school "hardening" are ready for the full floors for a final vote. "The component about mental health is very far reaching in it's ability to impact local citizens", Sheriff Adkinson explained.

"I like seeing the kids going to school, like seeing kids alive and moving on with their lives, getting back to learning", Andrew Pollack said. He encourages locals to contact their state representatives and senators about the issue.

"We have got to change".

Andrew Lincoln could not have made a better farewell message to his The Walking Dead costar Chandler Riggs than through a song. He's apparently pivotal to to everything that happens after Rick's all-out war against the villainous Negan.

The governor's news conference included comments from Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Conservative lawmakers are troubled by what they see as an intrusion on gun rights, including the establishment of a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases and prohibiting anyone under 21 from buying any type of firearm.

"We had Timothy McVeigh use fertilizer to kill 168 people in Oklahoma; in NY and Europe, people used vehicles; the bombing in Boston used pressure cookers", he said. "Better to focus on denying firearms to unsafe individuals, which avoids infringing on constitutional rights and is also more likely to be effective".

In a statement sent to the Times later Wednesday, a district spokeswoman said Eakins "does not believe arming teachers is an appropriate step to take".

Protesters outside Scott's event included Tim Heberlein. "Im more in favor of having trained law enforcement at the school than I am putting another task on school teachers".

The governor has been clear on his stance: he is not in support of arming teachers, a proposal the Legislature is pushing for in spite of opposition from Parkland students and parents.

"My wife is a teacher and she's concerned about turning our schools into what looks like prisons", adding that she might quit if teachers start carrying guns at her school.

"He didn't act after Pulse (nightclub shooting), he didn't act after Ft". The status quo has been changed on the shooting.

Before moving forward with the plan, Scott says it has to be something that everyone involved feels is doable. "We have to make sure Florida is never the same".
