After questioning, Netanyahu says 'there will be nothing' for police to find

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara Feb. 20 2018

As police investigators arrived at the prime minister's official residence in Jerusalem to question Mr Netanyahu, his wife entered a police station for her session.

The two are suspected of taking bribes from the owner of Israel's largest telecommunications company, Bezeq.

Another, Case 2000, involves an alleged plot to acquire positive coverage in Israel's biggest paper by providing to take steps to curtail the flow of a rival everyday.

Israeli police confirmed that an anti-corruption unit had questioned the couple for several hours each, but did not say whether the questioning was in connection with the case of Bezeq Israel Telecom. The police haven't yet ascertained whether the first lady is also a suspect, the spokeswomen said.

The investigation was opened under suspicions that the Israeli prime minister exchanged "favors" with the director of the news agency Walla to benefit from a favorable coverage of him.

Sarah Netanyahu, who was summoned only to testify, may have to explain some text message communications she had with Elovitch's wife, Iris, YNet News reported Friday.

Netanyahu was questioned for an eighth time by police Friday over fresh allegations, but protests his innocence and accuses the media and police of a witch-hunt.

The two will be questioned simultaneously but separately at the prime minister's official residence, Hadashot TV reported Wednesday, adding that investigators could present identical materials to both, including recordings gathered during the probe. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Netanyahu is scheduled to fly to the United States on Saturday and to meet President Donald Trump on March 5.

Both were told that they were regarded as suspects in the case.

Shlomo Filber, the former director-general of the Communications Ministry and a longtime Netanyahu confidant, signed a deal last week to turn state's witness and possibly incriminate Netanyahu in the affair. The accounts prompted Israeli police to interrogate the prime minister.

On February 13 Israeli police recommended Netanyahu be indicted for bribery, fraud and breach of public trust in two cases known as 1000 and 2000.

Netanyahu is accused of accepting almost $300,000 in lavish gifts from the Hollywood mogul Arnon Milchan and the Australian billionaire James Packer. Netanyahu reportedly was recorded asking Arnon Mozes, the publisher of Yediot Ahronot, for positive coverage in exchange for helping to weaken Israel Hayom, a free pro-Netanyahu newspaper that had cut into Yediot's business.
